Women's Golf Sweeps Big South Weekly Awards

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — High Point University women's golf swept the Big South Weekly Awards, as announced by the conference Thursday afternoon. Ella Perna has been named Golfer of the Week while Anna Howerton secured Freshman Golfer of the Week.

Perna led the team at the Charlotte Invitational, carding a 1-over in the first round before shooting even the next two rounds. The sophomore placed second to take home the individual runner-up trophy. A week earlier, Perna placed fourth in the UNCG Collegiate and was instrumental in helping the team take home the championship title and break two school records. High Point first broke the 36-hole record, which previously stood at 4-over 580, and now stands at 576, Next, the Panthers broke the 54-hole record, which was previously 5-over 869, until the team finished the tournament with an incredible score of 6-under 858.

Howerton placed in the top-five at Charlotte, shooting 1-over 73 and 72 during rounds one and two, respectively, before finishing with a 75 to card a total of 220. A week prior to Charlotte, Howerton competed in the UNCG Collegiate where she led the Panthers to a first-place finish, secured the tournament's medalist title, and shattered three individual school records. She first broke HPU's low opening-round record with a 6-under 66, which previously stood at 5-under 67. Next, Howerton broke HPU's 36-hole record by shooting 11-under 133. The record was initially 5-under 139. Howerton rounded out the tournament by breaking High Point's 54-hole record of 13-under 203, which the freshman broke with a 15-under 201.
