HPU Wins Edisto Island Invitational; Grubb Crowned Medalist

CHARLESTON, S.C. — The High Point University women's golf team wrapped up the fall season by winning the Edisto Island Invitational, while Makayla Grubb earned medalist honors at The Plantation Course at Edisto on Tuesday afternoon.

In a tie atop of the leaderboard at 3-over-par 855 with host Charleston after 54 holes, the Panthers earned the team win due to a lower final round score. HPU was two strokes (+2) better than Charleston (+4) over the final 18 to earn the team's first tournament win of the fall.

Meanwhile, Grubb won her second consecutive medalist honor and third overall in four-tournament span this fall, behind three under-par rounds (68-68-69) for an 8-under-par 205.

Head Coach Lyndsey Hunnell: "What a great way to finish the semester! The team battled hard in windy conditions and continued to fight back after tough holes. I'm proud of the way they stayed resilient and found a way to get the job done. It's exciting to walk away with a win knowing we still haven't come close to reaching our ceiling. We have a lot of great takeaways from this event that we can build on throughout the offseason as we prepare to hit the ground running this spring.

"Makayla continues to impress me. Her consistency and demeanor this season have been so fun to watch, and it's been exciting to see her confidence grow as she continues to compete at this level. She's reached a point where she understands that, with the way she prepares and the mindset she brings to each event, she has the ability to win every time she tees it up. I think that belief was the final piece her game was waiting for, and she's really started to unlock her potential. I can't wait to see what she accomplishes next semester!"

Grubb wraps the fall season with yet another medalist honor after entering her sophomore season without a collegiate win. Now, as the No. 50 player in all of Division I women's golf, she heads into the spring season with three wins to her name and an opportunity to climb the individual player rankings.

For the second straight tournament, Grubb led the entire 80-player field with 14 birdies after sinking five in the first and third rounds. She ranked second in Par 4 scoring (3.88; -4) and Par 5 scoring (4.56; -4). Grubb was one of two players to record an eagle, holing out on the Par 5 No. 10 en route to an 8-under tournament.

Howerton followed Grubb's standout performance with her best outing this fall. The senior solidified her second top-10 finish, placing sixth overall with a 1-over-par 214. Howerton led the field with the best average on Par 3 holes (2.75; -3) and was fourth in birdies (11). She sunk four birdies in round two and three each en route to a 1-under-par 70 and even par rounds, respectively.

Cherry carded an impressive outing and her best this fall, finishing tied for 14th with her lowest round coming in round one. The junior shot an even 71 to highlight a 7-over-par with seven total birdies.

Joyce finished just outside the top 20, tied for 21st as her 1-under-par 70 opening round led the way. The freshman sunk four of her eight birdies in round one and was tied for first, alongside Howerton, with the best Par 3 average (2.75; -3).

Lye rounded out the Panthers' lineup, tying 23rd for a top 25 finish. She carded two rounds of 73s in round two and three, while making nine birdies.

Up Next: This event concludes the fall schedule as the Panthers begin the spring season at the Oyster Shuck Match Play on Feb. 8-9 back in Charleston, S.C.
