Panthers Cruise Past Buccaneers

CHARLESTON, S.C. – High Point and Charleston Southern competed in Big South play on Saturday afternoon. The Panthers cruised to a 3-0 victory, picking up the team's eighth sweep of the season.

Site: CSU Field House
Score: High Point 3, Charleston Southern 0
Records: High Point (14-6, 7-0), Charleston Southern (8-13, 2-5)

High Point made an early statement in the opening set. Big hits from BayLea Sparks, Eve Wilson and Dylan Maberry helped the Panthers to an 8-3 lead. Sparks continued to dominate on the front line collecting three kills and a block to take a nine-point lead at 16-7.  Sparks solidified the first win with back-to-back kills.

The second set was a closer battle between the Panthers and Buccaneers. Tying the game at nine all, Sparks kept HPU on top with a powerful kill over to CSU's side of the court. Multiple errors by Charleston Southern helped boost High Point to a 17-12 lead. Coming out of a time out, the Buccaneers picked up two quick points to make it 17-14 but the Panthers pushed on to take an identical score as set one, 25-17.

The first 13 points of the final set for High Point witnessed a combination of errors by the Buccaneers as HPU had scored eight of the team's 13 points off CSU's errors. Sparks earned her tenth kill of the game in the mix. A 5-0 run by the Panthers extended the lead to 18-12, forcing Charleston Southern to take the team's second time out of the set. Strolling to a 10-point lead at 23-13, Hannah Hawkins, Anna Wilson and Ella Grasson subbed in on the action and helped guide the Panthers to the 25-15 win with a Wilson kill for the match point.
