HPU Men's Cross Country Finishes Its Regular Season at UVA

HIGH POINT, N.C. — High Point University competes in its final regular-season cross country meet on Saturday morning at the University of Virginia's Pre Nationals meet.

"As Neil Young sings, 'In the field of opportunity, its plowing time again,'" HPU Men's Cross Country Head Coach Mike Esposito said. "We just completed a very significant block of training and its now time sharpen and celebrate our fitness in the championship season ahead. UVA will provide great competition for us on the challenging National Championship course. Our focus is on taking aggressive and intelligent risks, and having the courage to finish the race with a punch. Hunter Steinau and Ian will commit to running up front with the rest of the team grouping up not far behind. At Notre Dame, we executed the front end of this plan but failed to close the second half of the race as needed. I am confident that our group is willing and ready to engage, concentrate, and then close with competitive excellence."

High Point rounds out its regular season with a third Power Five meet. Although UVA is not slated to race in the Panthers' heat, HPU will still race against a few P5 teams, such as Kansas State University, University of Miami, University of Missouri and Washington State University, providing solid competition and preparation for the upcoming Big South Championships meet.

Last time out, HPU competed at the Joe Piane Notre Dame Invitational and placed eighth out of 16 teams, competing against power five schools. Hunter Steinau led the Panthers with a 15th place finish. The senior had a 4:38.0 mile split before finishing with an 8K time of 24:43.0. Ian Miller trailed only 15 seconds behind Steinau, clocking a time of 25:03.0. Reuben Kosche was the third HPU runner to finish at 25:11.6, good for 40th place. Kyle Spencer rounded out the top-50 for High Point, finishing in 47th with a time of 25:18.4. Jake Tarosky clocked a time of 25:38.5 placing him in 64th. Kyler Koning was right on his heels in 67th place, finishing at 25:41.7. Jacob Fiorillo rounded out the lineup for the Panthers, finishing 105th with a time of 26:33.3.
