Anna Howerton wins medalist with program-best 54-hole score

GREENSBORO, N.C.  — High Point University broke two team records and claimed its second consecutive championship title at the UNCG Collegiate Tuesday afternoon, a feat led by freshman Anna Howerton, who broke several individual records and was the tournament's medalist.

HPU Head Coach Lyndsey Hunnell: "I am beyond proud of this team and their performance this week. The girls put in so much work to prepare and it showed! They were consistent and resilient. We are learning how to finish strong the final round while holding a lead. Today we didn't worry about our position and we just played our game. It was also so nice to win a local event where so many of our friends and families could come out and support us!"
 


The first team record HPU broke was the team's 36-hole record. High Point shot an even 576, while the record previously stood at 4-over 580. Later, the Panthers crushed HPU's 54-hole record which was previously 5-over 869, until the team finished the tournament with an incredible score of 6-under 858. 

While leading the Panthers in their record-breaking tournament, Howerton shattered three school records for herself and collected a collegiate low round. She first broke HPU's low opening-round record with a 6-under 66, which previously stood at 5-under 67. Howerton's first-round score was also the freshman's collegiate low round. Next, Howerton broke HPU's 36-hole record by shooting 11-under 133. The record was initially 5-under 139. Howerton rounded out the tournament by breaking High Point's 54-hole record of 13-under 203, which the freshman broke with a 15-under 201.

"Anna was phenomenal to watch," said Hunnell. "She is such a talented player and everything just fell right into place with her this week. She played steady and helped us so mich while never wavering."
 

Sophomore Ella Perna was impressive in her third tournament of the season, landing a top-four finish at T4. Perna started the tournament with an even 72, before shooting 1-under the next two rounds for a 2-under 214 finish. 
 
Julia McLaughlin had the third-best finish for the Panthers with a top-20 finish at T16. McLaughlin carded a 75 and a 74 in the first two rounds, before improving to an even 72 in the third. Danielle Suh wasn't far behind McLaughlin, finishing in the top-20 as well. Suh carded a 222 total to land T19. 

Maddie Hensley was the last Panther in the lineup, making her debut in Purple & White. Hensley carded a 2-over 74 for a total of 233, placing her T56.

Ana-Elena Kusters played in her first tournament of the season as an individual. Kusters shot a total of 229 to finish T43. Vynie Chen also competed as an individual, shooting a pair of 76s in the first two rounds before carding an 81, placing her T56. Darianys Guzman was the last of the Panthers to compete as an individual, shooting a couple 82s in the first and second rounds before improving to a 76 for a T86 finish.
