BOX SCORE
Head coach
Chelsea Banbury: "I'm disappointed with the outcome of the game. I do give Upstate a lot of credit, they battled for 40 minutes. They got down, and they continued to play hard and make plays. It's tough to win a game when you shoot like that from the field and settle from the three-point line, so we still have to put 40 minutes together. We'll come back and we'll be ready for Charleston Southern."
High Point opened up the game with a 9-7 lead after two
Skyler Curran triples and another three-pointer from
Jenson Edwards. But Upstate used an 11-2 run to close out the first quarter with an 18-11 lead.
The Panthers battled back in the second quarter, opening up the period with a layup from
Shakira Baskerville and a Terrell pull up jumper. HPU used a 6-0 run midway through the period with two layups from
Anna Häger and another one from Scheier to get back within 23-21. A string of six made free throws gave the Panthers the 27-25 lead with 1:29 to play in the half, but another layup from the Spartans tied the game at 27 apiece.
The Panthers rallied again in the third period, using a 7-0 run in the first two minutes to take the 34-29 lead. Terrell opened up the period with a layup before
Jenson Edwards knocked down her second triple of the day.
Claire Wyatt added another layup for her first points of the day down the stretch as well.
Terrell and
Jenson Edwards combined to take High Point on a 10-0 run to take the 44-31 lead with 6:33 remaining in the quarter. Terrell posted layups on back-to-back possessions before Edwards knocked down a triple and converted another three-point play with a layup through contact and a made free throw. Edwards was 3-for-3 from the charity stripe on the day.
While Upstate used a 9-2 run to pull back within 49-42, Terrell converted a three-point play with a layup and free throw with two minutes remaining. The Panthers held a 52-46 lead heading into the final period after shooting over 52 percent from the floor.
The Spartans worked back into a 52-51 ballgame, but
Jordan Edwards hit a triple to extend the Panther lead back to four points. But Upstate scored 10-straight points to take the 61-55 lead with 2:25 remaining in the game.
With 1:20 on the clock, Curran found Wyatt under the basket and
Jenson Edwards hit her fourth three-pointer with 45 seconds on the clock to pull back within 61-60. While the Panthers made a stop of the defensive end with 10 seconds left, they could not convert on offense and were forced to foul.
