Panthers Secure Huge 19-point Comeback Win

HIGH POINT, N.C.- High Point women's basketball came out victorious in a huge comeback win against the Charleston Southern Buccaneers this Wednesday night. The 19-point comeback win tied for the fourth biggest comeback win in program history for conference play.

Coach Banbury: "They played harder than us in the first half and we need a better twenty minutes. Our girls kept fighting, we played for 40 minutes and fortunately we came out on top".

Nakyah Terrell tallied the first points on the board for the Panthers but it was all Buccaneers for the rest of the first quarter, as Charleston Southern went on a 9-0 scoring run that put them on top 13-3. High Point shot just 33% from the field in the opening quarter in comparison to Charleston Southern who shot an astounding 61%.

Callie Scheier scored back-to-back baskets for the Panthers opening the second quarter before having to exit the game on an injury.

Soon after, the Panthers rebounded as Jenson Edwards dished the ball to Skyler Curran for three, gaining some energy back in the Qubein Center after a number of mistakes by both teams.

The Panthers trailed by 17 going into the second half, but they would not let off the gas.

Nakyah Terrell made a great pass to Claire Wyatt early in the second half for a bucket following a collaborative defensive effort on the other end to force Charleston Southern into a shot-clock violation.

Claire Wyatt, Skyler Curran, and Nakyah Terrell added three consecutive scores to cut the Buccaneers lead to just 8.

Jordan Edwards continued the push with a steal and score after a Buccaneer bucket.

A three from Claire Wyatt made the score 43-34.

Skyler Curran iced a jump shot from the baseline and Claire Wyatt downed both of her free throws but Charleston Southern kept the pressure on offensively late in the third quarter.

Jordan Edwards' shake-and-bake move down the lane tallied an "and-one" putting the Panthers within single digits.

An Anna Hager three followed by a Curran "and-one" and a Terrell layup made the score 53-51 with just 3 minutes left.

Curran knotted it at 53 with two made free throws and with two more trips to the line, she gave HPU their first lead of the game, 57-54.

Eight seconds remained with the score in favor of High Point, 59-57.

Jordan Edwards put the icing on the cake with a made free-throw securing the 19-point comeback win for the Panthers.

UP NEXT: High Point travels to Clinton S.C. to face-off against the Blue Hose of Presbyterian this Saturday, January 14th.
