Hot Shooting Helps Panthers Hold Off Blue Hose, 80-82

Box Score CLINTON, S.C. – A near record-tying day propelled High Point to an 82-80 win at Presbyterian on Saturday afternoon. The Panthers made 19 three-pointers, one shy of their own Big South record on 50 percent shooting from the floor and 65.5 percent shooting from deep. Claire Wyatt posted a career-high 27 points on 7-of-10 shooting from deep while pulling down six rebounds. Lalmani Simmons also posted a career-high with 18 points. Jenson Edwards and Jordan Edwards passed out six assists each as HPU tallied 23 assists on 27 made baskets.

High Point opened up the game with a 12-2 lead as Claire Wyatt hit four-straight three-pointers in the first three minutes.
 
 
After a Jordan Edwards triple, PC battled back to get within 15-11, but HPU's defense picked up two steals that turned into fast break layups for Lalmani Simmons. Simmons hit her first three-pointer on the next possession as well to give HPU the 24-15 lead at the end of the quarter.
 
 
The Blue Hose closed the gap at the start of the second quarter, trailing 24-22 with 7:32 remaining, but Nakyah Terrell knocked down a three-pointer before Anna Hager and Simmons each hit from deep to take back a 33-24 lead.
 
 
Jordan Edwards hit another triple to push the lead back to double digits with 4:35 left, but PC held the Panthers scoreless over two minutes before Jordan Edwards found Jenson Edwards on a cut for a layup. The Panthers held the 41-30 lead at halftime, shooting 51 percent from the floor and 71 percent from three-point range. High Point also tallied 14 assists on 15 made baskets in the first half.
 
 
Wyatt opened up the half with four made free throws on consecutive trips down the floor and added a layup to put HPU up 47-34 with 7:39 remaining. Jenson Edwards knocked down her first three-pointer to put the Panthers up 50-37 at the media timeout.
 
 
After the Blue Hose made layups on back-to-back trips down the floor, Wyatt ended the run with another three-pointer and added two more to end the quarter with HPU leading 59-51.
 
 
Simmons opened the final period with a made layup and two free throws to put HPU up by 10 points with 8:13 remaining. PC closed to 63-58 before Jordan Edwards and Nakyah Terrell each hit three pointers for the 69-60 lead.
 
 
Skyler Curran hit her first three-pointer before Simmons completed a three-point play with a layup through contact. After a PC made three, Curran countered from deep for her second triple in two minutes and her third came on the next possession.
 
 
The Blue Hose pressed the rest of the way out and used a 13-0 run to get back within 81-80 with 2.5 seconds remaining. Forcing PC to foul, Curran made a free throw to keep HPU up 82-80 with 2.2 seconds left in the game to hold on for the win.
 
Up Next: High Point travels to Winthrop on Wednesday, January 18th, to take on the Eagles. Tip-off is set for 6:00 p.m. in Rock Hill.
