HIGH POINT, N.C. – The High Point University volleyball dropped a three-set match to James Madison in the Millis Center on Wednesday afternoon.
Ally Van Eekeren dished out 22 assists while
Jenny Wessling tallied 13 digs.
The Dukes used a 7-0 run early in the first set to take the 10-3 lead before HPU worked to get back within 13-10 with kills from
Sophee Mink and
Gabrielle Idlebird. Mink,
Dylan Maberry, and
Sydney Palazzolo finished the set with three kills apiece.
After trading points early in the second set, JMU jumped out to the 13-6 lead before HPU used an 8-4 run to close the gap, 17-14.
Maria Miggins, Maberry, and Idlebird each had kills in the run while Wessling tacked on an ace.
The Dukes ended the rally with three kills and an ace, and despite trading points back and forth, HPU fell behind 2-0 after dropping the second set, 25-20.
The Panthers had a strong start in the third set, opening up with a 9-6 lead that forced a JMU timeout. Maberry had three kills while Palazzolo and Idlebird each added one.
JMU fought back into the set, and continued to stay close as the Panthers were unable to shake the visitors. After taking the 20-19 lead, the Dukes rallied off the final six points to take the 25-20 set win and earn the sweep.
Up Next: High Point travels to No. 1 Texas and Houston this weekend to continue non-conference play. The Panthers meet the Longhorns in Austin on Friday night before making the trek to Houston for a Sunday matinee.
