Panthers Rally to Pull Off 2-1 Thriller At Coastal Carolina

CONWAY, S.C. – The High Point University men's soccer team came out on top of a 2-1 thriller against Coastal Carolina on Sunday night. Trailing 1-0 in the final 10 minutes, the Panthers scored two goals in the 81st and 83rd minutes to walk away with the 2-1 win.

Head coach Zach Haines: "We needed a response tonight after not meeting our standards for work rate, mentality, and fight in our last games against Wofford & UNCG. The guys responded in the best way possible. Everyone competed tonight and we earned a big result. I am extremely proud of our resilience and look forward to us sustaining this level game-after-game."

The two teams battled for the first half, as High Point registered three shots while Holden Trent made three saves in goal for HPU, including a huge save in the final 2 minutes from point blank range.

The Chanticleers were the first to strike in the second half following a weather delay, as the home team scored in the 60th minute.

But High Point would continue to push with a flurry of shots, which earned corners and put pressure on Coastal in the last 15 minutes. Kaya Ignacio slipped a pass into the box for Larson Rula, who was taken down in the penalty area in the 81st minute. Ignacio stepped up for his second penalty attempt in as many games and tucked it away at 1-1.

The Panthers continued the offensive push as Brendan Krueger was taken down on the endline after receiving a pass from Rula, just outside the penalty area setting up a free kick. Freshman Jefferson Amaya whipped in the restart to a streaking Noah Holmes who nodded it into the back of the net, giving High Point the 2-1 advantage less than two minutes later.

The win continues an unbeaten streak for High Point against Coastal Carolina, who last beat the Panthers in 2014 during the Big South Conference Semifinals.

Up Next: The Panthers open Big South Conference play Friday night, September 16th, at Vert Stadium as HPU hosts Gardner-Webb.
