Game 1
An eight-run eighth inning helped the Blue Devils to a 14-2 win in game one of the doubleheader.
Â
Javon Fields hit HPU's first inside-the-park home run of the season to put the Panthers on the board in the sixth inning.
Â
Â
Another solo homer from
Jackson Melton in the eighth added a run for HPU, but the Panthers were unable to generate the offensive momentum to claw back into the game.
Â
Â
Game 2
HPU had a better offensive start, getting runners in scoring position several times within the first three innings, but the Panthers still were not able to plate any runs.
Â
With severe weather rolling in, HPU started to rally in the fourth inning as
Sam Zayicek led off with a single and Melton doubled to put two runners in scoring position. Fields knocked an RBI-single to put the Panthers on the board, but then a near two-hour weather delay paused the game with HPU leading, 1-0.
Â
Â
Coming back from the delay, the Panthers picked up where they left off, as
Peyton Carr's ground out scored Melton and moved Fields to third.
Â
High Point added five more runs in the fifth after
Sam Garcia retired the Blue Devils in the fourth on a pop up, ground out, and his first of five strikeouts.
Â
Â
Adam Stuart led off with a walk while
Andrew Amato singled to put runners on first and second.
Cole Singsank and Zayicek were both hit by pitches to move runners two bases each and score Stuart. Melton followed up with a two-RBI double while Zayicek scored on a throwing error on the same play.
Â
Â
Another wild pitch scored Melton and put High Point ahead with a comfortable 7-0 lead.
Â
Garcia continued his dominant outing in the fifth and sixth innings, striking out a combined four batters, including a three-up-three-down inning in the sixth.
Â
Â
Connor Smith relieved Garcia in the seventh, but picked up where he left off, forcing a ground out and two fly outs to retire the Blue Devils in order.
Â
HPU had another big inning in the eighth to seal the deal, plating four insurance runs on three hits to hold the 11-0 advantage.
Â
Â
Everett Vaughan pitched the final two innings for the Panthers, striking out the side in the ninth for a four-strikeout performance.
