Panthers Share The Wealth in Double-Digit Win Over VMI

Site: Vert Stadium (High Point, N.C.)

Score: High Point 16, VMI 5

Records: High Point (6-5, 1-1), VMI 3-8 (1-1)

HIGH POINT, N.C.— The High Point University Men's Lacrosse team defeated VMI 16-5 on Friday night. Asher Nolting led the way in scoring with four goals and three assists for seven points in the game. Nolting's over point total is now 329 and he sits firmly in ninth all-time in college lacrosse history in career points. Brayden Mayea finished second in points with four as he had three goals and an assist.

Coach Jon Torpey"It was a really good team win. After an effort last week where we did not play our best lacrosse I was glad to see the guys respond tonight. It is always great to be able to get a majority of your guys into the game. Credit to the team I thought they did a good job of staying with the game plan they stayed on script and it is great just to get that first conference win out of the way."

Panther Particulars

Michael Ippolito started the scoring for HPU in the first minute of the contest.

Four minutes later, Nolting scored off a find from Nick Rizzo as he completed the pass as he fell down.

HPU kept the heat on as Jack Vanoverbeke scored off a feed from Nolting.

The energy from the Panthers continued to grow as defensive midfielder Joel Scerbo put everything behind a shot on a fast break to put his Panthers up 4-0.

With 25 seconds to go in the quarter, Nolting added another putting HPU up 5-0 after one quarter.

The run continued into the second quarter as HPU scored nearly as fast as they did to start the first quarter as Mayea put his Panthers up 6-0.

VMI answered with a goal to stop the 6-0 Panther run to start the game.

HPU responded immediately as AJ Kiernan won the face-off and then turned it into instant offense with a goal to give HPU a 7-1 lead.

Jack Sawyer picked up his ninth goal of the season with 9:48 to play in the second quarter which made it an 8-2 advantage.

Tommy Meehan, Sawyer, and Mayea scored four straight goals for the Panthers to end the second quarter. HPU lead 12-2 at the break.

All the offense in the third quarter involved number 32 as he scored two goals and assisted Vanoverbeke's goal as HPU's lead grew to 15-2 as the game headed into the fourth quarter.

VMI opened the fourth with a three-goal lead which made the deficit ten, 15-5.

HPU freshman Isiah Moran-Weekes scored the last Panther goal of the night to give HPU a 16-5 lead with less than eight minutes to go in the game. That score would hold as HPU picked up its first SoCon win of the year.

UP NEXT

HPU will be back in action next Friday night with a trip to Hampton to face the Pirates at 7:00 PM in a SoCon matchup.
