Panthers Fall to Spartans in Midweek Action

The High Point University baseball team dropped a 17-6 contest to UNC Greensboro at Williard Stadium on Tuesday night.

Site: Williard Stadium (High Point, N.C.)
Score: High Point 6, UNC Greensboro 17
Records: High Point (10-19, 5-4), UNC Greensboro (14-15, 0-0)

The Spartans struck first, scoring two runs in the top of the first inning on two hits for the early lead.

HPU answered in the bottom of the second, plating a run to stay within 2-1. Peyton Carr led off with a single up the middle for HPU's first hit of the day. Carr advanced to second on a ground out and to third on a wild pitch. He scored on David Coleman's ground out to the right side.

UNCG countered with three more runs in the bottom of the third with a lead-off double while another batter was hit by a pitch to put runners at first and second. Another double down the left field line scored one run before a single to center field added another. The Spartans took the 5-2 lead on a single up the middle.

The fourth inning brought three more Spartan runs, but HPU would add four runs of their own in the bottom half of the frame. Carr knocked a double to right field and Cole Singsank singled through the right side to put runners on the corners with no outs. Coleman walked before Miggy Echazarreta and Jackson Melton each drew bases-loaded walks that scored Carr and Singsank. Charlie Klingler singled to left center to keep the HPU rally going, scoring Coleman. Javon Fields' sacrifice fly to center added another run to the Panther cause and pull HPU back within 9-5.

Four innings passed by as each team put zeros on the board until the ninth innings. The Spartans used four hits and five walks to score eight runs to take the 17-5 lead. Fields homered to left field, but was the only Panther to cross the plate in the final frame.

Up Next: High Point hosts Longwood this weekend in its next Big South series. Friday, April 8th's game is scheduled as a 6 p.m. first pitch.
