HPU Falls to Northeastern, 11-1

The High Point University baseball team dropped an 11-1 contest to Northeastern on Saturday night. The Panthers were lead offensively by Adam Stuart, Andrew Amato, and Cole Singsank, as they each recorded two hits, including a solo home run from Singsank.

Site: Williard Stadium
Score: High Point 1, Northeastern 11
Records: High Point (13-27, 7-8), Northeastern (19-19-1, 4-8)
W: Wyatt Scotti (7-2) L: Teddy Merritt (3-5)

Northeastern struck first with a pair of early runs in the second inning but scoring for both teams was nonexistent through the next three and a half innings.

Teddy Merritt threw 6.1 innings, scattering five hits and three earned runs while striking out two batters.

Northeastern added another run to their advantage in the top of the sixth. The lead-off batter reached base with a single to center field and then advanced to second base on the next play after a fielding error. A fly out moved the runner to third base and another single up the middle plated the runner in scoring position. But Merritt worked for back-to-back strikeouts to end the inning.

The Huskies put together a big inning in the top of the seventh as a walk and a single to right field put runners on first and second with one out. Another walk loaded the bases and the second hit of the night scored one run and kept the bases loaded. A double to center field allowed all three runners to score on the play. A follow-up single scored the fifth run of the inning to give the visitors the comfortable 8-0 lead before CJ Neese forced the batter to ground out into a 4-6-3 double play.

HPU showed signs of life as Cole Singsank got the Panthers on the board with a solo shot to left field, but the next three batters went down in order to end the inning.

After hitting a batter, Neese worked for two strikeouts in the top of the eighth to hold the Huskies. But Northeastern would rally again in the top of the ninth to extend the lead and pick up the 10-run win.

Up Next: The Panthers host the Huskies tomorrow (Sunday, April 24th) afternoon for the series finale at 1 p.m.
