High Point Posts 5-2 Win Over Huskies for Series Win

HIGH POINT, N.C. – The High Point Panther baseball team picked up its first series win in April with a 5-2 win over Northeastern in non-conference play. Sean Duffy got the start on the mound and threw for 5.0 innings while Everett Vaughan earned the save with 4.0 innings of relief work and two strikeouts.

Site: Williard Stadium
Score: High Point 5, Northeastern 2
Records: High Point (14-27, 7-8), Northeastern (19-20-1, 4-8)
W: Everett Vaughan (2-2) L: Cam Schlittler (2-7)

Duffy got out to an efficient start, retiring batters in order in the first and second innings. Meanwhile, the Panthers got on the board early as Jackson Melton reached on an error with two outs in the second innings and stole second base. Javon Fields' first hit of the afternoon scored Melton and gave HPU the 1-0 lead.

The Huskies eventually answered back in the fifth inning when a runner reached on a throwing error and advanced to second before reaching third base on a ground out. With a single to center field, the runner scored to tie the game. But a great defensive play by Cole Singsank ended the inning with the game knotted at one run apiece.

Vaughan also had a hot start on the mound, retiring batters in order in the sixth and seventh with a strikeout, two ground outs, and three fly outs.

HPU started a small rally in the bottom of the sixth as Singsank led off with a single through the left side. A sacrifice bunt from David Coleman moved Singsank to second base before Fields doubled down the left field line to score the runner. Peyton Carr followed up with another single to left field and scored Fields before advancing to second base on a throwing error to give HPU the 3-1 advantage.

The Panthers added two more runs in the seventh inning off a Singsank home run to left field after Andrew Amato reached base with a double to center.

A lead off home run for Northeastern brought the Huskies within 5-2 in the top of the eighth, but Vaughan worked for two fly outs and a strikeout to finish the inning before finishing off the Huskies in the ninth to give HPU the series win.

Up Next: High Point hosts Wake Forest on Tuesday, April 26th for non-conference midweek action. First pitch in Williard Stadium is set for 6 p.m.
