Panthers Show Out Against Winthrop

Site: Qubein Center (High Point, N.C.)
Score: High Point 86, Winthrop 44
Records: High Point (9-11, 6-3), Winthrop (4-16, 2-7)

The High Point University women's basketball team came out on top with a dominant team win over the Winthrop Eagles, 86-44, in the Qubein center on Saturday evening. Nakyah Terrell led the way for the HPU offense with 17 points on the day. Claire Wyatt and LaImani Simmons were right behind her with 12 points. Jaden Wrightsell had 10 rebounds.

Head coach Chelsea Banbury: "I think the last three games we've really started to put things together, we're playing well as a group. A lot of this has been driven by our defense, against Presbyterian it was good, our defense against A&T was good, and then tonight we came in and that's kind of what we played off of, our runs came off of defense. And also it makes teams not interested in playing when they can't score, so our team has really bought in to helping each other guard and as a result I think we've become a better defensive team which in turn has turned into better offense for us."

Panther Particulars
Claire Wyatt got the offense started for the Panthers hitting back-to-back three point buckets to start the game.

Jordan Edwards also contributed a three-pointer while Cydney Johnson contributed two points of her own off of a layup to bring the Panther lead to 11-2 five minutes into the first quarter.

HPU ended the first quarter with back-to-back Nakyah Terrell baskets to take a 18-9 lead.

An opening two points from the Eagles did not stop the HPU offense as they responded with an 8-0 run to start off the second quarter, including another three-point bucket from Terrell. Jenson Edwards hit her first three-pointer of the day to bring the Panther lead to 33-18 with two minutes remaining in the opening half.

The Panthers entered the halftime break leading Eagles 33-20. Claire Wyatt led the Panthers in first half scoring with 10 points, shooting 4 for 6 from the field. Nakyah Terrell was right behind her with 8 points. Jaden Wrightsell had seven first half rebounds for HPU.

The third quarter was all HPU as they came out of the halftime break strong with a 27-4 in which seven different Panthers contributed to.

The purple and white defense held Winthrop to just four points in the third quarter, while HPU shot 68.8% from the field to bring the score to 60-24, entering the final 10 minutes of play.

HPU's dominance did not stop in the fourth quarter as they were able to add 26 more points to their total, including 12 combined points from Shakira Baskerville and Hayley Berfield.

Up Next: The Panthers have a quick turnaround as they return to action at home on Monday (Feb. 7) as they host Radford in a rescheduled matchup from January 4th. Tip-off is set for 6 pm.
