BUIES CREEK, N.C. – It was a defensive battle between the High Point University women's basketball team and the Campbell Fighting Camels which ended with the home team victorious in overtime, 60-53. While the Panthers trailed by nine points with just over three and a half minutes left in regulation,
Nakyah Terrell poured in eight straight points and
Cydney Johnson made the game-tying layup in the final seconds of regulation. Terrell finished with a game-high 20 points to go along with six rebounds, three assists, and one block.
Jenson Edwards added 14 points, seven rebounds, and two steals in the effort.
Panther Particulars
Both teams scored on their opening possessions and then struggled to score again until Campbell made two free throws with 5:49 left in the quarter. The Panthers responded with a layup from
Claire Wyatt off a find from
Jenson Edwards.
Johnson and
Jenson Edwards each had buckets the last three minutes of the first quarter, but the Fighting Camels closed the frame on a 5-0 run to lead 15-9 heading into the second period.
While Campbell made another layup early in the period, the Panthers started to heat up offensively, going on a 10-0 run to take their first lead at 19-17 with 46 seconds left in the half.
Jenson Edwards and Terrell took turns scoring in the run, sinking back-to-back triples before Edwards made a pull up jumper and Terrell found the lane for a layup.
The Fighting Camels used a layup and two free throws to retake the lead at 21-19 heading into the halftime break.
The third quarter opened on a three-pointer scoring run as Campbell made three while HPU's
Jaden Wrightsell used the backboard to sink a triple of her own.
With four points from
Jordan Edwards on consecutive possessions, HPU pulled back within 30-26.
Jenson Edwards's layup with 1:57 remaining in the period was the final field goal of the quarter, keeping Campbell up, 37-30, with 10 minutes to play.
After an early Johnson layup, Terrell took control and started her 14-point fourth quarter with a layup before
Jenson Edwards added another layup to pull within 40-36. Campbell went on a 9-4 run late in the quarter, seemingly holding to momentum and keeping the Panthers at a safe nine-point deficit. But Terrell found open drives powering through the lane and running the floor and the Panther defense help Campbell scoreless until the final 10 seconds to help their cause.
After a Campbell free throw, Banbury called a timeout to advance the ball to half court, where HPU inbounded to
Jenson Edwards, who found Johnson in the corner and drove straight to the basket and fought for two points to tie the game at 50 with 4.4 seconds remaining.
HPU seemed to hold the momentum heading into overtime, but both physical defenses limited each team's ability to score field goals. HPU finally scored two points on Wrightsell free throws to lead 52-50 with 3:26 remaining in the extra period. Campbell took over, making two free throws and two field goals to take back the four-point lead with one minute remaining. The Panthers were forced to foul and could not get back the into their offensive rhythm.
Up Next: The Panthers await confirmation from the Big South conference for seed assignments for next week's tournament in Charlotte. HPU finishes the regular season with a 16-13 overall record and 13-5 in conference action.
