HIGH POINT, N.C.—The High Point University women's basketball team used a balanced scoring effort to sweep Charleston Southern on the season and win comfortably 70-51 in the Qubein Center. The Panthers had four scorers in double figures and were led by
Jenson Edwards with 15 points and 8 rebounds.
Head coach
Chelsea Banbury: "At this point in the season, I'm happy that we got the win. I thought overall we played better against them than we did the other day. Defensively it was a much better effort than we had down there in Charleston. I do think we had a couple breakdowns, they got way too many open threes, they shot at a pretty good percentage. So those are things we can't give up going into the conference tournament. I do give Charleston Southern a lot of credit. They only have seven players, and they played hard for 40 minutes and they were out there battling. So hats off to them, being shorthanded I still think they're playing hard."
Panther Particulars
Callie Scheier started the scoring off for the Panthers with the first 5 points of the game on a bucket inside and then a triple off an assist from
Cydney Johnson. The Panthers quickly took the lead on back to back baskets from Jenson and
Jordan Edwards, the latter being a three, to lead 10-5 at the under-5 media timeout.
The Panthers finished their 13-0 run with a basket and one by
Jaden Wrightsell to take a 15-5 lead with 2:45 to go in the first quarter. The Panthers finished the first quarter with a flurry and a
Jenson Edwards jumper at the buzzer to lead 24-13.
Jordan Edwards had a beautiful up and under move in the post to extend the Panther lead to 28-15 early in the second quarter. After excellent ball movement, Terrell made a three pointer to finish a 7-0 run, force a Charleston timeout, and increase the lead to 31-15.
After a scoreless three-minute stretch for the Panthers, Johnson nailed a three from the top of the key to extend the Panther lead to 39-21 at the 2:33 mark. The Panthers added a late bucket and led 41-24 at halftime. All seven Panthers who saw action in the first half scored with
Jenson Edwards leading the way with 8 points, while Wrightsell and
Jordan Edwards each chipped in 7 points.
Both teams got off to a slow start in the third quarter with the teams combining for only 6 points through the under-5 media timeout as the Panthers led 45-26. After another scoring drought for both teams,
Jordan Edwards hit a triple as the shot clock was expiring to increase their lead to 20 points at 48-28 with 2:29 to go in the third quarter. The Panthers finished the quarter on a 14-3 run and held the Lady Buccaneers to 5 points on 2-13 shooting in the quarter to lead 55-29.
The Panthers scored 16 points in the fourth quarter and rode to a 71-50 comfortable home win in their penultimate home game.
Jenson Edwards led the Panthers with 15 points and 8 rebounds. The Panthers finished with three other scorers in double figures:
Jordan Edwards with 14 points, 4 rebounds, and 6 assists; Scheier with 13 points, and Wrightsell with 11 points and 5 rebounds. The Panthers finished by holding the Lady Buccaneers to shooting only 35.4% from the field. The Panthers also shot 100% (12-12) from the free throw line, which they had not done since Radford back in February 2021.
