HPU Rebounds, Picks Up Win in Charleston

The High Point University women's basketball team battled for a 69-60 win over Charleston Southern on Thursday night in Charleston. Jaden Wrightsell led HPU with a game-high 20 points while Jenson Edwards recorded another double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds.  
 
Panther Particulars
High Point used a fast-tempo and ball movement early in the first quarter to take a 9-8 lead with 4:11 left in the opening quarter. Callie Scheier hit her first three-pointer of the night for HPU's first points on the night. Jordan Edwards and Jenson Edwards each made triples in the run as well.
 
 

Jenson Edwards buried a jumper while LaImani Simmons found the open lane for another two points to hold a 14-13 edge at the end of the first period.
 
 
Claire Wyatt opened the second quarter with a triple of her own before Jaden Wrightsell scored a driving layup and Wyatt added another layup in a 7-2 HPU run. The Panthers were able to hold the Buccaneers to only free throws for the first three minutes of the quarter.
 
 
HPU kept the momentum as Nakyah Terrell, Simmons, and Jenson Edwards each buries three-pointers on consecutive possessions.
 
 
Two more Wrightsell jumpers and two Simmons free throws helped the Panthers to the 40-29 halftime advantage.
 
 
The Buccaneers stifled the HPU offense in the third quarter, limiting three-point makes from the Panthers and using a 12-2 run in the last four minutes of the period. Wrightsell and Jenson Edwards had the only two made field goals in the quarter.
 
 
HPU responded in the fourth quarter, opening up with a 14-0 run with multiple layups from Jordan Edwards, Jenson Edwards, and Wrightsell.
 
 
The Buccaneers were able to pull back within five points with 45 seconds remaining, but Scheier and Wrightsell made two free throws apiece to secure the 69-60 victory for the visitors.  
Up Next: The Panthers will travel back to High Point and face Charleston Southern again on Saturday, February 19th. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
