The High Point University men's basketball team (7-11, 1-3) returns home after a week on the road. HPU hosts Winthrop on Monday, January 24th at 6:00 PM in a game that was rescheduled after being postponed earlier this month. Then, the Panthers will only have one day of a break before hosting Radford on Wednesday, January 26th at 7:00 PM.
Across The Bench
Winthrop
The Eagles came into the 2021-22 season picked to repeat as Big South champions.
Winthrop is 12-6 and 5-0 in the Big South so far this season. Winthrop has a power-5 win over Washington this season. Winthrop beat the PAC-12's Huskies 82-74.
Winthrop has played close conference games this season with six being the largest margin of victory so far.
Mark Prosser is in his first season as the head coach of Winthrop.
Radford
The Highlanders are 6-12 on the season and are 2-4 with Big South wins over Hampton and USC Upstate.
Radford is led in scoring by Rashun Williams and Bryan Hart as both average 9.3 points per game.
Radford also welcomed a new head coach this season. Darris Nichols is in his first season as the head coach of the Highlanders.
Last Time Out
HPU dropped an overtime contest to Hampton 68-64 on Saturday evening (Jan. 22nd).
John-Michael Wright led HPU in scoring with 17 points on the evening
. Alex Holt was second in scoring with 15 points on the night, ten of which came in the first half. Virginia native
Jaden House was the third Panther in double digits with 12 points.
Zack Austin was just a point shy of double digits with nine points.
Chairman of the Boards
Zack Austin leads the Big South in rebounding; he averages 8.1 per game. PC's Winston hill is the second best with an average of 6.6 boards per game. Austin has 145 rebounds on the year, he has 20 more then Hill in second with 125.
The Wright Way
Wright is averaging 20.3 points per game which leads the Big South. Wright is currently 6th all-time on the Division-I HPU scoring list with 1259. He is 3 points away from moving into 5th and surpassing Danny Gathings.
A Holt of Energy
Alex Holt turned in another great performance off the bench as he scored 15 points against Hampton. It was his second Big South game he has scored double digits of the bench for HPU.
