HIGH POINT, N.C.—The High Point University men's basketball team has added grad transfer David Caraher for the 2021-22 season Coach Tubby Smith announced. Caraher is from Chapel Hill, N.C., he stands at six feet and six inches tall and is a familiar name to High Point basketball fans as he was a two-year starter for nearby Wesleyan Christian where he played for current Panther Assistant Keith Gatlin. Caraher comes from St. John's where he spent three years after playing his freshman season at Houston Baptist where he was named the Southland conference's Freshman of the Year in 2018.
"We are really excited to have David join our basketball program," Coach Tubby Smith said. "He is a local player who went off to Houston Baptist and was freshman of the year in the Southland Conference. He then transferred to St. John's, we were hoping we could catch him before he went there." Coach Smith said with a smile. "He was signed by the great Chris Mullins, he played and started some games for them. He is a guy who can stretch the floor with his ability to shoot the outside shot he is a very good athlete who understands the game. All the coaches he has played for told me they enjoyed coaching him and I'm looking forward to coaching him as well."
Caraher is a St. John's graduate, as a member of the Red Storm, he played in 39 games while starting in three games. In 2019 under Mullins, Caraher played in every single game averaging 4.3 points per contest. His career-high in a St. John's Uniform was the 17 he scored against A-10-member UMASS in a non-conference game in 2019. At Houston Baptist, he averaged 16.2 points per game and was one of the great scoring freshmen of the 2017-18 season as he ranked 12th in the nation amongst freshmen in scoring.
"My decision to come to High Point really came down to my comfort level especially being here with Coach Gatlin," Caraher said about his decision to return to furniture city. "I played for him in high school and we had a very high success rate. Coming back home and of course being a part of a program with Tubby Smith, a legendary coach, just being able to pick his brain and learn as much as I can. Obviously moving into the new arena and being able to play in a high major facility, and being able to play in front of these fans every night, it is going to be super exciting."
Welcome Home David.
