High Point University men's basketball returns home after the win against Elon to host Guilford College on Tuesday (Dec. 7th). The matchup is the first between the two teams since the passing of North Carolina Basketball legend and iconic HPU coach Jerry Steele. The game creates a meeting between two teams Steele coached in HPU and Guilford.
Across the Bench
The Quakers played UNCW tough earlier this season as UNCW only won 77-68. Guilford was able to keep it a single-digit contest throughout.
HPU is one of two DI teams that Guilford will see this season.
This will be the second ODAC team HPU host this year after hosting Shenandoah earlier this year.
Last Time Out
HPU defeated Elon on the road 83-77 to secure its fourth win of the season. John-Michael Wright led the way for HPU in the key road win over the Phoenix with a 29-point performance. The Panthers had two twenty-point scorers on the night as Zack Austin added 20 points in the win. Emmanuel Izunabor was the third Panther in double digits with 12 points. It was the least number of turnovers the Panthers have had all season long as HPU took care of the ball only being turned over seven times at Elon.
You Got It (The Wright Stuff)
After scoring 55 points last week total in two games against Furman and Elon Wright has moved up to 8th all-time in points for HPU with 1,080. Wright is averaging 21.2 points per game which leads the Big South and gives him the 9th highest points per game average in the nation. Wright is one of six players representing non-power-5 conferences currently in the top ten for scoring in the country.
Block Party
Zack Austin is second on the Big South and 13th in the country in blocks per game with an average of 3.25.
Panther Dunk Counter
The Panthers have 24 dunks on the season so far. HPU recorded foul slams in the game against Elon. Austin had two while Alex Holt and Izunabor each added one in the win against Elon.
Tubby and the Three
The Panthers are shooting at 36.9 percent behind the arc, which is the 66th highest three-point percentage in the nation. This is the second time since his 1998 National Championship winning team that Tubby Smith has coached a team in the top 100 of three-point percentage. High Point (36.9, 66th, 2021-22) Minnesota (39.9, 9th, 2009-10).
Non-Conference Play
High Point will play 14 non-conference games in total, nine of them taking place inside the beautiful Qubein Center in its inaugural season and the other five occurring on the road. Four of the Panthers' five opponents on the road are Power-Five teams.
