Davidson, NC-Â High Point swept Wofford 3-0 on Friday afternoon to kick off the Wildcat Classic hosted by Davidson College. The win extended the Panthers to a 4-game win streak. Freshmen were again key contributors in High Point's victory. Big South player of the week Annie Sullivan led the Panthers in kills with 10, Kaley Rammelsberg and Megan Kratzer each had 9 kills. High Point controlled the match as they never trailed at any point throughout the evening.
"I thought today was a great win from start to finish." Head Coach Ryan Meek said. "I felt that our serving controlled the match and gave us lots of offensive opportunities. Wofford's speed and parity made them a really tough matchup, but I was proud of the team for handling those aspects, staying patient, and earning the win."
High Point started the first set hot scoring 7 points in a row forcing Wofford to call timeout. Wofford would come back to tie the first set at 9. It would go back and forth, then the Panthers would go on a run fueled by Rammelsberg, Salley, Kratzer, and Dumford. The Panthers won the first set Wofford and won 25-22.
The Terriers matched the Panthers at the start of the second set. Wofford tied the set at 4. With Macy Miller serving, High Point would go on to score 9 straight points and shifted the momentum of the set and the match back into the Panthers favor. Abby Bottomley went back to serve with a 20-16 HPU lead. Bottomley and the Panthers scored five straight points to take the second set 25-16. High Point took a 2-0 lead in the match at the break.Â
In the third set, High Point took control early in the set and never looked back. Gabrielle Idelbird continues to come through in big spots, she scored points that kept the match rolling and the momentum in the favor of the Panthers. Rammelsberg played a big role in the first set, she also was a key contributor in High Point's effort to close out the match in the 3rd set. Rammelsberg recorded 5 kills in the set. Megan Kratzer ended the match with 2 kills in a row to secure the High Point victory in the third set 25-21.
Bottomley had another big game defensively with 21 digs in the contest. Senior Jenna Smith led the way in sets with 22 while Mackenzi Thornburg added 15 sets as well.Â
