HPU Celebrates Life of Hall of Famer Bob Davidson

HIGH POINT, N.C.—High Point University track and field/cross country coaching legend and HPU Athletics Hall of Famer Bob Davidson passed away Wednesday evening (July 24) in Greensboro.
 
Davidson, a 1955 graduate of High Point College, is the Panthers' longest-tenured coach in High Point history, leading the men's and later women's cross country and track and field program for 39 seasons from 1962-2001. He was honored as coach of the year 21 times across three conferences. HPU cross country teams captured 18 conference championships, while track and field programs won 14 conference and division titles under Davidson's tutelage. 
 
Davidson was captain of the High Point College men's basketball team from 1951-54 and was a member of two conference champion teams. He also played for the Panther baseball team in 1951 and 1952 and went on to play professional baseball for two seasons in the Philadelphia and Milwaukee organizations.
 
Upon returning to High Point College, Davidson taught exercise science, physical education and sport training classes while coaching. He was given the Meredith Slane Teacher of the Year Award in 1988, which is one of the highest academic honors given at HPU.
 
A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday (July 28) at Lawndale Baptist Church in Greensboro. There will be a visitation hour from 2-3 p.m. prior to the service.
