Panthers Open Outdoor Campaign In Atlanta

HIGH POINT, N.C. - High Point University track and field embarks on the 2019 outdoor season this Friday, competing at the Yellow Jacket Invitational for two days in Atlanta, Ga. The meet will be hosted by ACC member Georgia Tech, as the Panthers get set to face some of the top competition available in the south and southeast regions.

HPU will send 46 athletes to the Peach State this weekend, competing against ACC opponents Clemson, Florida, hosts Georgia Tech, Louisville, North Carolina and Pittsburgh. For most schools attending this weekend's events, this will be their first taste of outdoor competition in 2019, as 19 programs are expected to send a full squad to Atlanta this Friday and Saturday. 

Action officially gets underway at 6 p.m. on Friday, leading off with the women's hammer throw, while Saturday's festivities will begin with the men's shot put at 11 a.m.

Meet/Facility History
• This weekend will be the first time the Panthers have competed on the Georgia Tech campus in nearly a decade, sending seven athletes to the Georgia Tech Invitational in 2010
• Big South Hall of Famer Taylor Milne's 3:43.99 in the 2005 Georgia Tech Invitational 1500m still stands as the program's top-mark all-time

Last Time Out
• The Panther women and men took second and third respectively in February's Big South Indoor Championship, combining for seven event wins at that meet, to close out a successful indoor campaign
• Daniel Bogle received Big South Freshman of the Year honors for his performance at indoor conference championships, finishing second in the 60m (6.88) and fourth in the long jump (7.13m)
• Sophomore Famke Heinst was named Big South Most Outstanding Runner this indoor season after claiming wins in both the mile (5:05.68) and 3000m events (10:03.03)
• The Panthers excelled in the multis, with Pablo Romero and Anika Weisbrod earning new Panther records in the heptathlon (5,231) and pentathlon (3,401) respectively. Romero's total was good enough to earn the junior an event win, while Weisbrod claimed second overall
• The HPU women took second in the 2018 Big South Outdoor Championship, while the men's side claimed fourth. The two sides were ranked second and third in this year's Big South Preseason Coaches Poll

COMING UP NEXT
• The Panthers will host their lone track events of the year with the Bill Webb Combined and VertKlasse Meeting scheduled to take place at Vert Stadium March 21-23rd
• This is the 11th straight year HPU has hosted the VertKlasse and the third straight year the school has hosted the Bill Webb, as the two meets take place on the same weekend for the first time in program history
