BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. -- The High Point University men's soccer team stayed perfect in Big South Conference play thanks to a goal in the 77th minute by senior
Ilias Kosmidis in a 1-0 win over Gardner-Webb on Saturday (Oct. 12) evening.
"I thought we were fantastic tonight," said head coach
Zach Haines following tonight's victory. "We showed resilience tonight after a tough game at Wake Forest the other night in a tough Big South game where were playing a team that was undefeated in the league and having a really good season."
High Point had its first true opportunity of the evening in the 16th minute when senior
Jonathan Bolanos dribbled the ball out of the right corner past multiple Bulldog defenders. His shot just inside the box was met by GWU's goaltender, who was playing outside of his net.
30 seconds into the second half it would be junior
Dylan Bradley with a quality chance for the Panthers. After receiving a pass in the Gardner-Webb 30, Bradley put a juke on a defender before taking a shot on net just inside the box that was stopped by a sprawling Bulldog keeper.
Kosmidis finally broke the scoreless tie in the 77th minute for his second goal of the season. Gardner-Webb was bringing the ball out of its end when Kosmidas came from behind to take the ball from the GWU midfielder, then proceeded to make a move by a defender before ripping a shot past the outstretched net minder.
Redshirt senior goalkeeper
Keegan Meyer faced eight shots en route to his fifth shutout of the season. With his 25th career shutout he becomes the all-time leader in clean sheets in program history, passing Kody Palmer (24) '15.
The Panthers held a 19-8 advantage in shots and a 12-1 edge in corner kicks.
HPU extends its Big South regular season record without a loss to 17 games, which dates back to the 2017 season, while the Panthers have not dropped a conference road contest in the last 14 contests that dates back to the 2016 season.
HPU will return to Vert Stadium on Wednesday (Oct. 16) when it hosts Presbyterian under the lights at 7 p.m.
