High Point, N. C. – The High Point University volleyball team fell to Winthrop 3-0, 25-13, 25-19 and 25-21, Saturday, Sept. 22 at the Millis Center.
"It was a tough day," head coach
Ryan Meek said. "Unfortunately, we didn't come out with the focus and intensity we needed. Winthrop played fantastic. We knew coming in they were going to be a great team and a challenging match. Unfortunately, we didn't rise to that challenge. We'll take a few days off and get ready for Radford next week."
The Eagles (6-8, 2-0) out hit the Panthers (6-8, 1-1) .264-.164 and logged 42 kills to HPU's 37. Both teams were nearly even defensively with Winthrop recording 48 digs to High Point's 45.
Winthrop took an early lead in the first set at 15-9 and pulled away, winning the set 25-13.
The Eagles jumped to a 20-11 lead in the second set, but the Panthers fought back with 6-0 run to cut the score to 20-17. Winthrop won the set 25-19 as junior Makayla Doyle recorded two kills.
In the third set, both teams went back-and-forth staying tied through 36 points, 18-18. The Eagles went on a 5-0 run to take the lead and won the set 25-21.

Jenna Smith recorded a team-high 26 assists, while sophomore
Abby Bottomley had a team-high 16 digs.
Juniors Sydney Gunter and Jace Kleffner, with 10 digs a piece, led the Eagles offensively. Seniors Phoebe Wu and Carlie Skelton were the leaders for Winthrop on the defensive side with 15 and 12 digs, respectively.
