1st Career Strikeout Video
HIGH POINT, N.C. - Former High Point University baseball pitcher Jaime Schultz made his Major League debut on Tuesday night, pitching for the Tampa Bay Rays. Schultz is the second player from HPU to reach the majors under head coach
Craig Cozart.
Schultz emphatically burst onto the scene, appearing in the seventh inning of the Rays' eventual 4-3 win over the Oakland Athletics at the Oakland Coliseum. Protecting a 3-1 lead, Schultz struck out Stephen Piscotty, Matt Joyce, and Bruce Maxwell in order on just 14 pitches (10 strikes) to earn his first career hold.
Schultz is just the third player in the history of High Point University to make it to the majors joining current Cleveland Indians closer Cody Allen and Dick Culler, who appeared in 436 games from 1936-1949. The righthander was drafted by Tampa Bay in the 13th round of the 2013 season after his redshirt-junior campaign at HPU. Schultz was an All-Big South second team selection in 2010 after posting a perfect 5-0 record with a 4.84 ERA in 20 games (five starts).
After a redshirt season in 2011, Schultz came back in 2012 to record six saves and post a 3.14 ERA in 23 games as a redshirt-sophomore. He wrapped up his HPU tenure with 14 appearances (six starts) in 2013 while tallying a 3.56 ERA. He finished his career with 176 strikeouts in 161.1 innings, the 10th-most punchouts in school history. His career 9.82 K/9 rate is the fourth best at HPU.
The Castleton, N.Y native's journey has involved six years in the Tampa Bay minor league system, including parts of the last three years with Triple-A Durham. Schultz has made 120 career appearances (79 starts) in the minors and holds a 21-17 record with a career 3.62 ERA.
