HIGH POINT—Former High Point University men's basketball forward
Tarique Thompson has signed his first professional contract with Herzoge Wolfenbuttel for the 2017-18 season.
Â
Herzoge Wolfenbuttel is in the ProB league in Germany and is the farm team to the Lowen Braunschweig club in the Basketball Bundesliga, the top league in Germany.
Â
"I am so happy for Tarique that he will be able to continue his basketball career as a professional overseas," HPU head coach
Scott Cherry said. "He has a great opportunity with this German team to advance his career quickly. I hope he has a long and successful future playing the game he loves and learning foreign cultures."
Â
In 2016-17, Thompson set career highs for points (10.0 per game), rebounds (5.2 per game), blocks (17) and steals (26), all while coming off the bench in a career-high 23.7 minutes per contest. He posted three double-doubles. For his career, Thompson shot 52 percent from the field and 75 percent from the free throw line.
Â
Thompson is the fourth Panther to sign a professional contract this summer, joining Adam Weary ('16 – Bristol Flyers – England),
Miles Bowman Jr. (MBK Rieker COM-therm Komarno – Slovakia) and John Brown ('16), who signed with De' Longhi Treviso for his second pro contract in Italy.
Â
Other recent Panther pros under Cherry include: Eugene Harris ('10 – KTE-Duna Aszfalt – Hungary), Tehran Cox ('11 – Libya), Corey Law ('12 – Harlem Globetrotters), Nick Barbour ('12 – Texas Legends – NBA D-League), Devante Wallace ('15 – WBC Raiffeisen Wels – Austria) and Lorenzo Cugini ('16 – Omnia Basket Lungavilla Pavia – Italy).
