High Point Notes:
• The Panthers opened the season with a 1-0 triumph over visiting Howard on Friday evening at Vert Stadium. Freshman
George Ekdahl scored the game-winning goal off a feed from sophomore
Siggi Benonysson in the 58th minute.
• Redshirt-sophomore
Keegan Meyer made two saves in net to record his sixth career shutout. Meyer ranked second in the Big South last season with five shutouts.
• HPU is undefeated in its last three road openers (2-0-1). Last season, the Panthers defeated Loyola (MD) 3-1 in Baltimore, Md.
• High Point finished 2016 with an 11-4-4 overall mark, the most wins for the program since a 12-5-3 campaign in 2012. HPU was 5-1-2 in Big South play, earning the #2 seed in the Big South tournament before falling in the semis to #6 Longwood.
• HPU returns 18 letterwinners from last year's squad, including eight starters. The Panthers welcome in 11 newcomers this year, nine freshmen and two transfers. Of the 29 players on the roster, 20 are underclassmen.
• The Purple & White were selected second in the Big South Preseason Poll behind defending champ Radford. HPU received two first-place votes while RU claimed the remaining seven.
UNCG Notes:
• UNCG drew with UAB 0-0 in its season opener on Friday in Birmingham, Ala. UAB outshot UNCG 17-15, but the Spartans registered five shots in OT to the Blazers' one.
• The Spartans were 11-7-2 in 2016, falling in the semis of the Southern Conference tournament to top seed ETSU.
• This season, the Spartans were picked third in the Preseason SoCon poll. Junior midfielder Leeroy Maguraushe was named to the Preseason All-Southern Conference team.
• UNCG has led the SoCon in scoring the last two years with 85 goals, 16 more than the closest contender (Wofford, 69).
Series Notes:
• HPU and UNCG are meeting for the 24th time, and first time since 2015. High Point won that contest 1-0 in OT on a goal by
Renato Punyed.
• The Panthers have won five consecutive matchups with the Spartans dating back to 2010. UNCG last won vs HPU on Oct. 11, 2008 (3-0).
• The Purple & White have outscored UNCG 11-2 in the last five matchups, which includes three straight shutouts.
• High Point assistant coach
Josh Gillon was a volunteer assistant and goalkeeping coach for UNCG last year.
