HIGH POINT, N.C. – Just two days after visiting Virginia Tech, the High Point University women's basketball team is back in the Millis Center on Monday night to host Davidson at 7:00 p.m.
Â
The Panthers (4-4) ended a two-week break with an 86-63 setback at Virginia Tech on Saturday. Meanwhile, the Wildcats enter the contest at 3-7 after falling to Gardner-Webb on Friday.
Â
QUICK HITTERS:
•
Shea Morgan set a new career high with 20 points at Virginia Tech on Saturday. The junior is averaging 12.8 points over the last five games and has scored in double figures five times in eight games this season. Prior to this season, she broke double digits 10 times in her first 61 career games.
Â
• Harris averaged 6.7 points per game in the first four contests of the season, but has exploded averaging 17.6 over the last four. The Charlotte, N.C. native had never scored more than 20 points in a game before doing in twice in the last four.
Â
• HPU has assisted on 61.7 percent of its made field goals on the year. That's the highest mark in the program's Division I era with a slight lead of the 2010-11 squad's 60.4 percent mark.
Â
•
Kennedy Currie is a burgeoning force in the paint for the Purple & White. The redshirt-junior has led the team in rebounding in each of the past five games (9.6/game) and is averaging 2.2 blocks per outing during the last two weeks.
Â
• High Point has hit more three-pointers and shot a better three-point percentage than seven of its eights opponents this season.
Â
• HPU has attempted fewer free throws than all eight of its opponents, but have made more free throws in three contests.
Â
• During her first season as the team's main point guard,
Camryn Brown is second in the conference in assist-to-turnover ratio with 2.0 assists for every miscue.
Â
• Brown's five three-pointers on nine attempts are Virginia Tech raised her season percentage to .469 this year. Her 2.9 three-pointers made per game leads the Big South.
Â
• The Panthers have relied heavily on its backcourt in road games this season.
Emma Bockrath (16.5 ppg) and
Camryn Brown (15.8 ppg) have combined for 54 percent of the team's scoring in four road contests this season.
Â
• HPU is 49-21 in home games under
DeUnna Hendrix and 13-7 against non-conference foes in the Millis Center during that span.
Â
Winning the Long-Range Battle
• The Panthers rank 14th in the nation in three-point percentage defense (25 percent) with their new in-your-face style brought over by associate head coach
Heather Kearney. Last year, the team allowed opponents to shoot 31 percent and ranked 144th.
Â
• Offensively, the Purple & White are 15th in the country hitting 41.8 percent of their three-point attempts on the year. That, too, is an improvement on a program-record 35.7 percent mark in 2016-17.
Â
All Kinds of Threats
• The Panthers had four different leading scorers in the first four games of the season.
Â
• Six different members of the Purple & White have scored 20 points in a single game in 2017-18.
Â
• Eight of the 11 Panthers to play in a game this season have posted a career-high scoring outing through the first seven contests.
Â
Reserves Needed
• The Panthers are 4-0 when the bench outscores their opponent's reserves and 0-4 when that margin is reversed.
Â
• HPU averages a 28-15 edge in its wins and a 21-13 deficit in losses. Harris has accounted for 44 of the 52 bench points in the team's four losses.
Â
All-Time Series with Davidson
The Wildcats have a three-game winning streak in the series and lead 6-5 entering Monday's showdown. Davidson claimed a 82-72 win last year and a double-overtime triumph in the Millis Center in 2015-16.
Â
Scouting the Wildcats
Under first-year head coach Gayle Coats Fulks, the Wildcats are 3-7 overall and 1-1 against Big South opponents with a win over UNC Asheville and a setback to Gardner-Webb. Mackenzie Latt and Justine Lyon are a dangerous inside-outside duo combining for nearly half of the team's scoring on the year.
Â
Matchup to Watch
The Panthers are one of the best three-point shooting and three-point defenses in the nation. Meanwhile, Davidson is struggling from beyond the arc hitting just 28 percent of its three-point attempts and allows its opponents to knock down 30 percent of their attempts.
