HIGH POINT, N.C. – The High Point University women's basketball team continues its busy first week of action visiting No. 11 Duke on Thursday night at 7:00 p.m. in Cameron Indoor Stadium.
Â
The Panthers (1-1) opened the season five days ago with a 111-54 thrashing of N.C. Wesleyan in the Millis Center before dropping a hard-fought contest at Ohio, 64-61, on Sunday. Meanwhile, Thursday's contest will be the home opener for the Blue Devils (1-0) who tipped off their season on Sunday with a 74-61 victory at Grand Canyon in Phoenix, Ariz.
Â
QUICK HITTERS
• Junior
Emma Bockrath has opened the 2017-18 campaign with back-to-back double-doubles for the first time in her career. She is one of just 10 players nationally with two double-double already this season.
Â
• Despite playing a forward spot, junior
Shea Morgan has paced the team in assists in both games this year. The junior ranks 29th in the nation with 11 total assists.
Â
• HPU assisted on 56.6 percent of its field goals last season, which was a six percent increase from 2014-15. With eight of the nine Panthers who dished out at least 10 helpers last year back, HPU has assisted on 57.5 percent of its makes this season.
Â
• Only 10 teams have more than High Point's 42 assists in the early going of the 2017-18 season.
Â
• Hendrix finally has a veteran roster to work with for the first time since 2014-15. HPU has had at least 70 percent of its roster comprised by underclassmen each of the last two years, but have nine upperclassmen this season.
Â
• The addition of
Heather Kearney to the staff is showing early returns as HPU is holding opponents to 33.6 percent shooting through two contests.
Â
• High Point's 23 steals against N.C. Wesleyan is tied for the second most in a game so far this season. Meanwhile, the Panthers' 98 shot attempts is the highest single-game mark in the country and the 111 points from that contest rank fifth.
Â
• The Panthers are 34-43 in road games under
DeUnna Hendrix and 4-23 in non-conference road outings in that span.
Â
• The Purple & White are 2-38 against current members of Power-5 conferences since joining the Division I ranks in 1999-2000. That record includes a 1-17 mark against the ACC with the win coming against Pitt on Dec. 2, 2011. The other victory came against Florida on Dec. 21, 2009. HPU has never defeated a ranked foe.
Â
Adding a New Dimension
• In the first 45 games of her career, Bockrath shot 28.2 percent from beyond the arc averaging 0.7 three-pointer made per game. Since then, the junior is hitting 41.8 percent from downtown and drilling over 1.5 trifectas per outing.
Â
• Similarly, sophomore
Camryn Brown is connecting on 48.1 percent (25-of-52) of her three-point attempts since the midway point of her freshman season.
Â
• The backcourt duo has accounted for 10 of the team's 16 makes and just seven of the 16 misses this year.
Â
Continuing to Rebound
• Last year, the Panthers outrebounded its opponents by 5.3 boards per outing, which ranked 45th in America. That number was an 8.6 per game improvement from the 2015-16 season after that squad placed 266th nationally.
Â
• Through two games in 2017-18 that trend as continued as HPU ranks fourth nationally in total rebounds (109). The team has also outrebounded both of its opponents and sits 31st in the nation in rebounding margin (17.5).
Â
Consecutive Starts Record
Bockrath has started 63 straight games through the last two-plus seasons leaving her 10 games short of HPU's D-I record. (See ranking on right.)
Â
All-Time Series with Duke
Going all the way back to two meetings during the 1974-75 season, HPU records show a 2-0 mark versus Duke. However, the Duke's record book begins with the 1975-76 campaign, not officially counting those matchups.
Â
Scouting the Blue Devils
Duke is coming off a 28-6 season, which saw them earn a No. 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament before falling in the second round. The team returns two All-American caliber fifth-year seniors in Lexie Brown and Rebecca Greenwell. Last year, that duo combined for 34.7 points per game and hit 156 three-pointers.
Â
NEXT UP
HPU returns home for another double-header with the men's team when it hosts Barton College at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 21 in the Millis Center. The games will be on a separate ticket.
