HIGH POINT, N.C. – The High Point University women's basketball team will look to continue building momentum on Tuesday at Radford with a 7 p.m. tip in the Dedmon Center.
Â
The Panthers (4-11, 2-2) traveled to Asheville, N.C. over the weekend and earned a crucial 76-60 triumph over the Big South preseason favorite Bulldogs. Meanwhile, Radford (12-3, 4-0) continued its hot start with a 73-55 home win over Longwood on Saturday.
Â
Quick Hitters
•
Emma Bockrath has ramped up her already staggering production since the conference season started. The sophomore is averaging 15.3 points, 8.3 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 2.3 steals in HPU's four league contests.
Â
• For the second straight season, the Panthers are leading the Big South in free throw shooting percentage (.758) and three point shooting percentage (.337). HPU ranks 32nd in the nation from the charity stripe.
Â
• Finally healthy in the frontcourt, HPU has pulled down 16.7 offensive boards per game over their last five games.
Â
• Outside of her record scoring pace,
Kaylah Keys is headed toward other remarkable career milestones. The guard needs 54 rebounds, 21 assists and 13 steals to become the first Panther in the team's Division I era to rack up 400 rebounds, 300 assists and 200 steals.
• High Point was credited with 16 assists on its 28 made shots against the Bulldogs on Saturday. That ups the team's average to assists on 60.2 percent of its made baskets. For comparison, the 2015-16 squad dished out assists on 50.5 percent of its made baskets while the Highlanders have assisted on 55.6 percent of their buckets this winter.
Â
• With her start at UNC Asheville,
Kaylah Keys became the second Panther in the Division I era to start 100 contests. She needs six more to pass Frances Fields for the most in HPU's Div. I history.
Â
•
Kat Harris is now 41-of-47 (.872) from the line this year, which is good for second in the Big South and 30th in the country.
Â
• The last two times HPU and Radford met in the Dedmon Center, the game was decided in the final seconds. In 2015, Ayana Avery drilled a game-winning three with 30 seconds left in a 61-58 victory. Last year, it was
Kat Harris with the heroics hitting a layup at the buzzer in a 56-54 triumph.
Â
All-Time Series with Radford
The Panthers own a 26-17 edge in the overall series after posting a 2-1 record against the Highlanders last year.
Â
Last Time They Met
HPU jumped out to a 35-20 lead with 1:51 until halftime in the Big South Quarterfinals on March 11, 2016. However, Radford stormed back to take a 72-57 victory despite 15 points and five boards from
Kaylah Keys.
Â
Scouting the Highlanders
Radford has kicked off conference play in dominant fashion winning games by an average of 14.3 points while holding opponents to 51.0 points per contest. The Highlanders will rely on a frontline trio of Destinee Walker, Jayda Worthy and Janayla White who combine to tally 33.8 points and 21.4 boards per night.
Â
The Matchup to Watch
Tuesday's contest is a clash of styles. HPU relies on its up-tempo pace and wing scorers while Radford will look to slow the Panthers down and score inside. HPU will need to be efficient offensively because the Highlanders pull down a conference-leading 72 percent of defensive rebounds.
Â
Next Up
After back-to-back road games against teams at the top of the conference, the Panthers are back in the Millis Center on Saturday, Jan. 21 to host Gardner-Webb. The Runnin' Bulldogs are off to a 2-2 start in conference play this year.
