HIGH POINT, N.C. – Junior
Andre Scrubb matched his career high with 11 strikeouts in High Point baseball's 7-2 win over Longwood on Saturday night at Williard Stadium. The win by the Panthers evened the three-game series between the two teams at a game apiece.
"This was an important win for us tonight," head coach
Craig Cozart said. "When you look at conference standings, it was imperative we win this game to put ourselves in position to win the series. Longwood is a solid club that plays hard and I was glad with how we responded after going down.
Dominic Fazio came up huge today and
Andre Scrubb came back from a tough outing last week with eight outstanding innings tonight."
Scrubb allowed just two earned runs on three hits and three walks in a season-high eight innings of work. The right-hander gave up just one hit after the first inning and improved to 6-2 on the season.
Ryan Jones took the loss for Longwood on the mound and dropped to 1-2 on the season after giving up three runs in one inning of work out of the bullpen. Lancer starter Steven Farkas pitched 3-1/3 innings and allowed two earned runs on three hits and two walks while striking out three.
High Point improves to 21-10 overall and 6-2 in the Big South with the win while Longwood drops to 19-13 overall and 7-4 in conference.
The game remained scoreless until the fourth inning when Drew Kitson put Longwood on the board with a two-run home run to left. The right fielder hit a fly ball that carried just over the wall, giving the Lancers a 2-0 lead.
The Panthers came right back with two runs in the bottom of the inning to tie the game back up at 2-2. Sophomore
Austen Zente led off the HPU half of the inning with his first collegiate home run to halve the Longwood advantage. High Point then loaded the bases on a single by sophomore
Hunter Lee and walks by junior
Drew Fopeano and senior
Dominic Fazio. The back-to-back walks spurred a Longwood pitching change as Jones replaced Farkas but the right-hander walked junior
Josh Greene to tie the game.
High Point loaded the bases again in the following inning and Fazio cleared them with a double into the left field corner to put the Panthers in front, 5-2. Senior
Tim Mansfield singled and Zente followed with a double to leadoff the inning then junior
Chris Clare earned a one-out walk to fill the bases for Fazio.
RBI singles by Fazio and Greene in the seventh inning added two more runs to the HPU tally and gave the team a 7-2 lead.
Fazio reached on all four of his plate appearances, finishing 3-3 with a walk and four RBI on the night. Zente went 2-4 with a double, a home run and two runs scored and Greene went 1-2 with two walks and two RBI. Lee and Clare joined Zente with two runs scored as the top three in the HPU lineup finished 4-11 with a walk and six runs scored.
High Point will host Longwood in the rubber game of the weekend series on Sunday, April 10, at 1 p.m., in Williard Stadium. The Panthers will try and clinch their seventh-straight weekend series with a win over the Lancers on Sunday. Â
