HIGH POINT, N.C. – The High Point University baseball team claimed its seventh-straight weekend series with a 2-1 win over Longwood on Sunday afternoon at Williard Stadium. Freshman
Andrew Gottfried struck out a career-high seven to pick up the win for HPU.
"This was a tough one today," head coach
Craig Cozart said. "Longwood is a quality club and they did not give us anything all weekend. We had our issues driving guys in when we had opportunities but games like this build character. The two best things to come out of this are that
Andrew Gottfried grew up a little bit and
Tyler Britton got some revenge after taking the loss on Friday. It's huge to be 7-2 in the league right now."
Gottfried allowed just one run on five hits and two walks over seven innings of work to improve to 3-2 on the season. He matched his career high in innings pitched and posted a new career high in strikeouts by one. The right-hander retired 13 of the final 14 batters he faced, allowing just one walk after the third inning.
Senior
Tyler Britton got the final five outs, four by strikeout, to earn his second save in 2016. Britton came into the game with the tying run on in the eighth inning and got a pop-up and a strikeout to end the inning then struck out the side in the ninth.
Cody Wager took the loss for Longwood and dropped to 2-1 on the season. Wager pitched two innings and allowed one run on fur hits while striking out one. Lancer starter Luke Simpson pitched 4-2/3 innings and allowed one run on three hits and five walks.
High Point broke a 1-1 tie in the seventh inning with an RBI single by sophomore
Carson Jackson. The Panthers put runners on the corners thanks to a singles by junior
Chris Clare and senior
Dominic Fazio and Jackson hit an opposite-field single into the gap in right-center to put HPU in front, 2-1.
The win gives High Points its seventh-straight series victory as the Panthers took two of three games from the Lancers and improved to 22-10 overall and 7-2 in the Big South. Longwood falls to 19-14 overall and 7-5 in conference play with the loss.
It was the Lancers that got on the board first thanks to an infield single by Connar Bastaich in the first inning to give the Lancers a 1-0 lead. High Point came back to tie the game two innings later on a bases-loaded RBI single by junior
Drew Fopeano, scoring senior
Tim Mansfield from third.
