DURHAM, N.C. – The High Point University men's track & field team battled through blustery and rain-soaked conditions Friday during day one action at the Duke Invitational at Morris Williams Stadium.
Leading the way for the Panthers, senior
Paul O'Donoghue finished 12
th in the 800m run with a time of 1:52.90, while freshman
Patrick Van Der Cruyssen was 17
th in a personal best time of 1:55.29. The time eclipsed his top overall 800-meter collegiate finish (1:56.64) set at the Big South Indoor Championship. Junior
Nick Williams placed 42
nd with a time of 2:02.42.
In the 400m dash, senior
Nick Hula made his 2016 debut in the event and placed 18th with a time of 50.87 seconds.
Running into a steady headwind, the Panthers battled their way through the 100m dash prelims. Freshman
Sean Banda finished 19
th in 11.04 seconds while senior
Andrew Kuras was 31
st (11.25 seconds). Sophomore
James House, facing the toughest wind of the seven heats (+1.1) was 34
th.
On the jumps circuit, junior decathlete
Pat Irwin finished 25th in the long jump with a mark of 5.86m (19-2.75).
A larger contingent of HPU student-athletes will be in action Saturday in Durham, including the Panther pole vault and javelin units. In addition, junior
Vinny Todaro will race in the 1500-meter at the Virginia Challenge at 7:45 p.m. Saturday in Charlottesville.
