HIGH POINT, N.C. – After three straight tough road games, the High Point University women's basketball team is back in the Millis Center to entertain Norfolk State on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
Â
On Sunday, the Panthers (1-4) pushed No. 19 West Virginia in an 82-59 setback in the WVU Coliseum. However, through the first quarter the Purple & White trailed by just six points thanks to 11 points from freshman
Camryn Brown.
Â
Brown continued her solid play throughout the game posting career highs in points (19), rebounds (6) and assists (5). Similarly, sophomore
Lindsey Edwards also posted a season-high with 16 points while hitting 7-of-12 shot attempts.
Â
Brown is Big South Freshman of the Week
Camryn Brown entered last week's games with a career high of five points. But she upped it to 12 on Tuesday at UAB before breaking it again with 19 at WVU. On the week, she averaged 15.5 points, 4.0 rebounds and 3.5 assists per contest.
Â
Sharp-Shooting Panthers
HPU is in the top-2 in the Big South and rank in the top-100 nationally in all three main shooting categories:
           • Field Goal Percentage: .426 (90th)
           • Three-Point Percentage: .354 (73rd)
           • Free Throw Percentage: .737 (68th)
Â
Reserve Impact
• Through five games, HPU's bench had registered 43 percent of the scoring (139-324) and nearly half the rebounds (91-192) after combining for 35 points and 12 boards at WVU.
Â
• Six of the 10 times the Panthers have had a player score in double figures, that player has come off the bench. Edwards and
Camryn Brown have combined for five of those performances on the year.
Â
• Neither Brown or Edwards have started in the last two contests, but have combined for 59 of the team's 125 points. The dynamic bench duo has started hot scoring 33 of the squad's 43 first-quarter points at UAB and WVU.
Â
Keys is Climbing
Senior
Kaylah Keys is 38 points from tying Shamia Brown for HPU's Division I scoring record. She also is within striking distance of breaking the D-I record for three-pointers and free throws made.
Â
Scouting Norfolk State
The Spartans were picked to finish 12th in the 13-team MEAC in the preseason after going 3-24 in 2015-16. This year, Norfolk State is just one win away from equaling last season's win total after beating St. Augustine's and Lehigh. The squad returns three starters including Preseason All-MEAC Second Team selection Kayla Roberts. The junior is living up to the billing leading the team in scoring (12.7/game) and rebounding (8.7/game).
Â
All-Time Series with the Spartans
HPU and Norfolk State have split their previous two meetings in 1999 and 2000.
Â
Against the Mid-Eastern Atlantic Conference
The Panthers are 15-8 all-time against the MEAC. The most common opponent has been North Carolina A&T (6-3).
Â
