LIVE STATSLIVE VIDEOHIGH POINT, N.C. – The High Point University men's soccer team returns home to face inter-Triad rival UNCG on Wednesday night at 7 p.m., in Vert Stadium. The game is a White Out with free t-shirts being given to all fans in attendance.
High Point is just 1-3-2 this season after suffering a heartbreaking loss at George Mason on Saturday. The Patriots scored in the 109th minute to break a scoreless dreadlock and pick up the 1-0 win. High Point finished with a 20-16 edge in shots and put six on frame to GMU's four but were unable to score.
Junior
Renato Punyed led the HPU offense with eight shots – including three on goal. Meanwhile, senior
Collin Sweeney and sophomores Ede Kudolo and
Avery Ryan recorded the team's other three shots on goal. Punyed had High Point's best chance to claim the win with a penalty kick opportunity in the 87th minute. The midfielder hit a shot to the left midway up the frame but it was just pushed away by the George Mason keeper.
The Panther attack has struggled to find the back of the net this season, scoring three times in six games. Ryan, redshirt-freshman Justin Shear and freshman
Ben Hietala have all scored once for HPU in 2015. High Point's defense has been stout, allowing just six goals and posting two shutouts. Redshirt-senior
Kody Palmer has played every minute in net for the Panthers and is 1-3-2 with a 0.90 goals-against average and a .824 save percentage.
UNCG comes into the week with a 4-2-1 mark on the season following a 1-0 win over Jacksonville on Saturday thanks to a goal by forward Damieon Thomas. The Spartans also have wins over Virginia Tech, Longwood and UT Rio Grande Valley.
Thomas leads UNCG with nine points on four goals and an assist. He is tied with Leeroy Maguraushe for the team lead in goals while Jacques Francois is tops on the squad in assists with three. Logan Rohde has played every minute in goal for the Spartans and is 4-2-1 with a 1.19 goals-against average and three shutouts.
High Point and UNC Greensboro have met 21 times in their history with the Spartans holding a 14-8 edge in those contests. The two teams last met in 2013 when HPU picked up a 3-0 road win behind goals by
Mamadee Nyepon (2) and
Erien Campbell.
