Women’s lax plays host to UMBC Saturday

HIGH POINT, N.C. –
The High Point University women's lacrosse team will play the first of two-consecutive home games Saturday when the Panthers host UMBC inside Vert Stadium.
 
First draw between the Panthers and Retrievers is set for 2 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on the Big South Network. Live stats also can be accessed on highpointpanthers.com.
 
After facing off with UMBC Saturday, the Panthers will host Vermont on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
 
HPU is coming off a 16-8 setback to No. 20 James Madison on Monday in Harrisonburg, Va. The Panthers (1-3) played the Dukes to a 3-3 tie over the first 22 minutes of action, but JMU used a 6-0 run over the next 13 minutes to take command of the game.
 
Senior Julia Burns continued her strong start to the 2015 campaign with 14 saves against the Dukes. She is averaging 14.5 saves/game over the past two contests and was named Big South Defensive Player of the Week on Wednesday after stopping a career-best 15 shots while allowing just six goals in a win against Virginia Tech on Feb. 20.
 
Burns ranks second in the country in saves (49) this season and is fifth in saves/game (12.25).
 
Offensively at JMU, junior Allie Foard posted her fourth multi-point effort in as many games this season with a team-high three points on a goal and two assists. She leads the team with 11 points (7g, 4a) this season. Foard is having a breakout beginning to the season after posting 14 points in all of 2014.
 
HISTORY vs. UMBC
Saturday's game marks the second all-time meeting between the Panthers and Retrievers. HPU won the only game in the series, 16-6, on March 5 last season in Baltimore. Current Panthers Kendyl Gardner, Emily Meier, Leah Pace, Stephanie Pazulski, Emilie Pugliese, Abby Berrettone and Foard all scored in last season's meeting.
 
A LOOK AT THE RETRIEVERS (2-2, 0-0 AMERICA EAST)
UMBC has posted a 2-2 record to begin the season. After falling to Temple (10-9) and La Salle (10-9) to begin the year, UMBC has posted consecutive wins over Mount St. Mary's (5-4) and American (9-5). The Retrievers were picked to finish fifth out of seven teams in the America East preseason poll.
 
Senior attack Abby Wilson leads the team offensively with 12 points on 10 goals and two assists this season. Sophomore attack Sam Nolan has registered a team-high four assists to go along with two goals while freshman midfielder Caitlin Miller has posted a team-best 17 draw controls in just four games. Freshman goalkeeper Kelsey Major has played 170:09 of a possible 252 minutes in cage while posting a 4.58 goals against average and .552 save percentage.
