The High Point University women's track & field team wrapped up the first day of the JDL Hilton Garden Invitational on Friday. Sophomores Julia Zautcke and Erika Peoples led the Panthers on the track while Jill Marois had the Panthers best finish of the field events.

Zautcke and Peoples both competed in the 5,000-meter run placing third and fifth, respectively.  Zautcke, who won the 5,000-meter event at the Virginia Tech Invitational in 18:58.63, bested that time on Friday by running 17:56.95. Peoples followed Zautcke crossing in a career-best 18:14.43.

In the 800-meter race, freshman Cozette Collin ran a team season-best 2:19.38 to place 14th while freshman Natalia Ocasio crossed in 21st with a time of 2:22.78. Meanwhile, in the 400-meter dash, sophomore Lilla Lorand placed 29th in 1:00.35.

Marois had HPU's best finish in the Friday's field events by clearing 3.35 meters (10-11.75) to finish seventh in the pole vault. Also in the field events, freshman Jamie Schnuck had a season-best throw of 10.47 meters (34-4.25) in the shot put while freshman Alexis Fernandez finished 13th in the triple jump with a distance of 11.23 (36-10.25).

The Panthers had sophomores Zoey Miller and Sara Katherine Kirkpatrick both competing in the pentathlon on Friday. Miller and Kirkpatrick both had successful events throughout the competition. Kirkpatrick's best finish came as the runner-up in the 800-meter with a time of 2:30.26. Miller's best showing came in the shot put where she placed fourth with a throw of 9.48 meters (31-1.25).

High Point will return to action tomorrow at the Hilton Garden Invite beginning with the field events at 9 a.m.  The Panthers will have athletes in the weight throw , long jump and high jump tomorrow. On the track, HPU will feature competitors in the mile and 200-meter races.
