The High Point University men's soccer team fell to No. 7 Liberty by a score of 1-0 in the quarterfinals of the 2013 Big South Championship presented by Musco Lighting on Tuesday night at Vert Stadium. HPU outshot the Flames 17-10 in the match.

"Every single guy put his heart into this game tonight so I can't be upset with anyone," head coach Dustin Fonder. "I think our effort level was excellent but we lacked quality at times. You aren't always going to have quality but the one thing you can control is effort. This team played tonight with great effort and enthusiasm. I just wish we could have found a goal in the end."

The Panthers nearly scored in the third minute of action when redshirt-junior Sonny Mukungu's header off a corner kick was stopped with a diving save by LU keeper Scott Sutarik. Redshirt-freshman Pat Shelton got his foot on the rebound but could not direct the shot around the prone Sutarik.

Liberty went ahead in the 21st minute when Sachem Wilson scored his 10th goal of the season to put the Flames up, 1-0. Jamie Foxwell hit a hard shot on goal forcing a save by HPU keeper Kody Palmer. The rebound fell to the feet of Wilson and the forward hit a hard shot past Palmer for the goal.

High Point poured forward in the second half looking for an equalizer. HPU put up the first five shots of the period and outshot the Flames by a 9-3 margin in the second 45 minutes.

The Panthers forced five second-half saves by Sutarik including a lunging stop in the 89th minute on a header by sophomore Erien Campbell.

Senior Adam Sewell led High Point on the night with five shots and two shots on goal. Shelton, junior Mamadee Nyepon and freshman Renato Punyed all had two shots on the night.

Palmer made three saves in the game for High Point. Sutarik finished the contest with seven saves to earn his fourth win of the season.

The loss to Liberty eliminates the Panthers from the 2013 Big South Men's Soccer Championship. High Point finishes the regular season with an 8-8-3 overall record. Liberty improves to 10-8-0 on the season and advances to the Big South semifinals to face No. 3-seed Longwood.
