The High Point University men's soccer team fell at home to Winthrop University by a score of 1-0 on Saturday night in Vert Stadium. Redshirt-sophomore Kody Palmer made four saves in the loss.

"I thought the overall game was pretty even but when we made an error they made us pay," head coach Dustin Fonder said. "We would have loved to push this game to overtime and have a chance to get three points. We will have to learn from this and get better as we get ready to face Radford."

The only goal of the game came in the 33rd minute when Winthrop went up 1-0 on a goal by Achille Obougou. The Eagles' Mason Lavallet dribbled between two HPU defenders and dropped off a pass to Obougou at the right post and the forward tapped it in to put Winthrop up a goal.

High Point had chances to tie the score late in the contest as both junior Mamadee Nyepon and freshman Chris Ramsell each put shots on goal but were unable to beat the Winthrop keeper.

The Panthers finished with a slim 13-12 advantage in shots, putting five on frame. Nyepon had five shots in the game to lead HPU.

The loss drops High Point to 4-7-2 overall and 2-2-1 in the Big South on the season. Winthrop improves to 8-4-1 overall and 2-3-0 in conference play.

HPU's next game comes on Wednesday, Oct. 23, when the team travels to Radford, Va., to take on the Radford Highlanders. The game is scheduled to kick off at 6 p.m.
