The High Point University women's basketball team picked up a win against Big South opponent Winthrop, 81-50, on Monday night in the Millis Center.
Cheyenne Parker broke the Big South single-season blocks record with five on the night and 99 for the season.
"I am really proud of the energy we came out with tonight," head coach Jennifer Hoover said. "We played with great intensity on both ends of the floor and it helped us build an early lead. Our defense was key for us tonight and helped create a lot of scoring chances the other way. Obviously it is good to pick up two wins this weekend and get back on track as we get close to the Big South tournament."
Parker came away with a double-double, her 16th of the season, scoring 17 points and grabbing 17 rebounds. In addition to her five blocks, she also had two steals and an assist. Parker broke the Big South record of 98 which was set by Radford's Kelli Darden in 2007-08.
Senior
Shamia Brown led the Panthers with 23 points on the night while coming down with five rebounds and two assists. Junior guard
Erin Reynolds contributed 18 points on the night with four assists and four rebounds.
Tayler Tremblay also came away with double-digit points with 11 and recorded 7 rebounds and six assists.
"Shamia had a great game on her senior night," Hoover said. "She has been such a fantastic player for High Point during her time here and I am very happy that we were able to get the win for her tonight."
Dequesha McClanahan led the Eagles with 18 points on the night and recorded six rebounds. Diana Choibekova contributed 10 points on the night.
High Point improved to 16-11 on the season and 11-5 in the Big South, while Winthrop fell to 16-12 overall and 10-6 in league play.
Reynolds opened the game for the Panthers with a quick layup for two to put HPU ahead, 2-0. Parker came away with a steal on Winthrop's first possession and handed the ball off to Reynolds who scored another layup.
On the next possession, Brown grabbed her own rebound and put it in for two with 18:18 remaining in the first.
Laura Whitt then came down with a rebound on the defensive end and gave a quick pass to Reynolds who pulled up at the three point line to drain a trey and pick up a foul for the four point play to give HPU a 10-0 lead with 16:50 left in the half.
High Point extended the lead to 18-0 before Winthrop's McClanahan was able to knock down a jumper to give the Eagles their first two points of the game with 13:49 remaining in the first.
Reynolds then went back to work, scoring four more points in the next minute to keep the HPU run alive and extending the lead to 20, 22-2, with 12:56 left in the half.
With 10:20 left in the first, Winthrop's Choibekova hit a three pointer before Reynolds scored two more on a fast break layup to give HPU a 28-5 lead and bring Reynolds first half point total to 14.
With eight minutes left in the first, Winthrop's McClanahan made a jumper from the right side, which would start an 8-4 Winthrop run. Brown made a jumper from the foul line to bring the lead back to 23, 36-13, and restart the Panther offense with 4:44 remaining in the half.
High Point would head into the locker rooms with a 21 point lead, 39-18.
The Panthers and Eagles battled back and forth throughout the second half, with High Point maintaining an 18-point lead or more. HPU extended its lead to as much as 31 points to finish the game 81-50.
