Evan Emery and
Steven Scally both set High Point University records to highlight the men's track & field team's results at the Virginia Tech Invitational on Friday and Saturday. Emery ran a time of 22.10 in the 200-meter and Scally threw the 35-pound weight 13.58 meters (44-6.75).
"It was great to see a couple of school records when we didn't have many people competing this weekend," said HPU head coach
Mike Esposito. "Evan looks like he's ready for another good season in the sprints and Steven has been working really hard to improve in the weight throw.
Jacob Smith also ran well in the 3K and
Justin Doehr looked good in the 400 today."
Emery's time of 22.10 in the 200-meter broke the old record of 22.14 set by Kirk Rudder in 2004. He placed fifth overall and also took 11th in the 60-meter dash with a time of 6.90 meters to crush his previous best in that event.
Scally's throw of 13.58 meters (44-6.75) in the weight throw blew away the old record of 12.69 meters (41-7.75) set by Ken Diaz in 2005. It was a significant improvement over his best of 11.54 (37-10.5) from last season.
Smith placed second with an indoor-best of 8:27.90 in the 3,000-meter. In his first race back after an illness in the fall, freshman
Jeff LaCoste placed ninth in the 3,000-meter with a time of 8:45.56.
Doehr continued his impressive opening weekend with an eighth-place finish in the 400-meter. He finished third in his heat in 49.47, just behind Daniel Harrison of Wake Forest who came in at 49.46. Doehr finished the 500-meter in 1:05.89, good for fifth place on Friday night.
In the 800-meter, freshmen
Chris Muggler and
Evan Gingrich came in 12th and 14th, respectively. Muggler edged Gingrich and ETSU's Desmond Pierce with a time of 1:58.36 while Muggler came in with a time of 1:59.28.
On Friday, redshirt-senior
Jevin Monds placed fourth in the 1,000-meter in 2:31.18. He narrowly beat East Tennessee State's Filip Jalovy who finished in 2:31.74. This was the first weekend of competition for Monds since the 2010 cross country season after redshirting the last year to train for his final season.
