Sophomore Kelli Joline scored in the 83rd minute against Loyola (Md.) to give the High Point University women's soccer team a 3-2 win over the Greyhounds on Friday night in Baltimore, Md. HPU allowed Loyola to tie the game with two second-half goals but fought back for the one-goal win.

“This is a hard place to get a win so for this young team to come back after giving up two goals shows great character,” head coach Marty Beall said. “I thought we were very good in the first half. We finished two quality chances and it could have been a couple more if not for some great saves by Loyola's keeper. Loyola is a strong program and they came back at us in the second half. We learned a great lesson here tonight but it is always better to learn a lesson in a win.”

With the game tied at two late in the second half, freshman Jacky Kessler ran onto a loose ball on the right side of the field and immediately crossed it back into the penalty area to Joline who was making a run up the center of the box. The sophomore got her head on the ball and rifled it into the net to secure the win.

The victory was High Point's first of the season as the Panthers improved to 1-2-1 on the season. The loss dropped Loyola to 0-5-0.

Kessler opened the scoring for the Panthers in the 23rd minute when she pounced on a rebound from a shot by Joline in front of the Loyola goal and pounded it into the back of the net for her first collegiate goal. Joline found space at the edge of the box and hit a bending shot which caromed of the post directly to Kessler.

Less than two minutes later the Panthers got on the board for a second time when sophomore Becca Hemby got her head on a free kick from senior Danniel Rosado and deposited it in the back of the net for her second goal of the season. Rosado hit the ball to the far post from the left side of the field where Hemby ran onto the pass and finished to put HPU up two.

Loyola got in the scoring column in the 65th minute on a header by Gianna Mangione. The ball was crossed into the box from the left side by Nicole Schiro and redirected by Mangione just inside the far post to make the score 2-1. The goal was Loyola's first of the season.

The Greyhounds then tied the game in the 72nd minute when Schiro managed to split between the two HPU center backs and beat High Point's Jesse May to the through ball from Joie McLaughlin to even the score at 2-2.

Joline and Kessler each finished the game with a goal and an assist for the Panthers. HPU outshot the Greyhounds 12-9 and put nine shots on target in the game. May was credited with the win in net for High Point.

The Panthers finish their four-game road trip on Sunday when they take on Towson at 1 p.m. The meeting will be the first-ever between the two teams.
