DeUnna Hendrix joins HPU as women's basketball assistant

DeUnna Hendrix has joined the HPU women's basketball staff as an assistant coach, head coach Jennifer Hoover announced on Wednesday. Hendrix joins the Panthers after four years with the with the women's basketball team at Jacksonville University.

“I am thrilled to have DeUnna join our staff and our Panther family,” Hoover said. “I recruited her when she was coming out of high school so I have known her for almost 10 years now and she is the total package as both a person and coach. She is a relentless recruiter that brings a wealth of experience and energy to our team. She has extensive basketball knowledge and the ability to break it down to our young players. She will be instrumental in the development of our guards and in helping us reach our ultimate goal of bringing championships to High Point.”

Hendrix spent her first two seasons on staff as a graduate assistant before being elevated to an assistant coach in 2009-10. The Dolphins advanced to the Atlantic Sun championship game in three out of her four seasons including the 2011 Championship where JU fell to Stetson.

“"I am extremely excited to join the Panther family under Coach Hoover's guidance,” Hendrix said. “HPU is truly a special place with limitless possibilities. I am very eager to get to work and to help instill the work ethic and commitment necessary to bring championships to High Point University.”

Hendrix was instrumental in helping former Dolphin Regina Omoite finish her career as one of the top floor leaders in the history of the program. Omoite set a single-season record with 138 assists in 2007-08 before breaking her own mark with 154 assists in 2008-09. Omoite finished her career first in the Jacksonville records in assists (459) and minutes played (3,953), while ranking second in three-pointers made (127) and third in steals (191). She also scored 1,027 points in her career to finish fifth on the all-time scoring list.

Prior to joining the Dolphins, Hendrix played collegiate basketball at the University of Richmond from 2003-07. Hendrix was a team captain as a junior and senior while also leading the squad to a consecutive 20-win seasons in 2004 and 2005. The Spiders reached the WNIT Final Four in 2004 and earned a bid into the NCAA Tournament in 2005. She appeared in 104 games in her career with 56 starts, including 45 in her final two seasons with the program. A native of Kokomo, Ind., Hendrix earned her bachelor's degree in rhetoric and communications in May of 2007.

During her time at Richmond, Hendrix worked as an Assistant Camp Director for the Richmond Summer Basketball Camp in 2006 and was also a camp counselor for the event in 2004 and 2005.

A three-sport athlete in her prep career, Hendrix was team captain, first team all-Howard County, all-area MVP, first team all-state, Associated Press All-State and was an Indiana All-Star at Kokomo High School. She also led the squad to an undefeated season, a 4A State Championship and a No. 14 national ranking as a senior.

Hendrix also played professionally for the Jacksonville Cougars of the Women's Blue Chip Basketball League (WBCBL) in the summer of 2008.
