Jacob Smith won the 3,000-meter steeplechase in the Roanoke/VT Last Chance meet to lead the High Point University men's track & field team at Roanoke College on Thursday night in Roanoke, Va.
Smith paced off a rabbit in the early part of the race before leading the final few laps to finish the steeplechase in 9:02.2. Sophomore
Dakota Peachee placed sixth and senior
Jevin Monds, who ran unattached, finished ninth in his debut in that event.
In the 5,000-meter, junior
Neal Darmody placed seventh and freshman
Jacob Roach placed 10th.
Two Panthers are in position to qualify for the first round of the NCAA Championship May 27-29 in Bloomington, Indiana. Smith is ranked 18th in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with his time of 8:54.24 at the Big South Championiship and Darmody is ranked 37th in the 10,000-meter with his time of 29:54.25 from the Stanford Invitational. The top 48 qualify.
