Tristan Faure placed 10th in the decathlon, setting a new HPU men's track & field record of 5,950 points, at the Deacon Combined Events on Tuesday and Wednesday at Wake Forest in Winston-Salem, N.C. Faure set five career bests in the 10-event competition.
"Tristan had a really solid couple days of competition in a meet that included a few Olympians," said assistant coach
Eric Dudley. "It was a great meet for him to get personal bests in five events and beat his previous best score by over 300 points."
Faure placed 10th out of 22 competitors in the meet, which only featured the men's decathlon and women's heptathlon. His score of 5,950 crushed his previous HPU record of 5,618 at the Big South Championship. Before Faure, the HPU record was 5,027 by Nick Benton in 2009.
Faure posted a career best of 11.51 in the 100-meter dash on Tuesday before getting career bests of 17.06 in the 110-meter hurdles, 28.56 meters (93-8) in the discus, 3.32 meters (10-10.5) in the pole vault and 4:27.16 in the 1,500-meter on Wednesday. He also set a collegiate-best of 6.38 meters (20-11) in the long jump on Tuesday.
In his other four events, Faure threw the shot put 9.90 meters (32-5.75), high jumped 1.80 meters (5-10.75), ran the 400-meter in 51.92 and threw the javelin 40.00 meters (131-2).
"He had to run around 4:20 in the 1,500-meter to break 6,000 points for the meet," said Dudley. "Before the race I asked him if he wanted to go for it and he said yes. He was on pace at 1,200 meters and ran gutsy to finish in 4:27 but couldn't quite get it. To run under 4:20 is really elite for a decathlete."
"There were two Olympians and several other elites in the meet, which was a really good learning experience for the younger athletes," said Dudley. "Some of them didn't compete in all the events to limit the wear on their bodies, but the learning experience was invaluable."
Three of the elites in the meet included Gonzalo Barroilhet of Florida State, who placed second in the meet, along with Jangy Addy and Chris Helwick. Barroilhet (Chile) and Addy (Liberia) both competed in the 2008 Olympics and are former NCAA champs in the decathlon. Chris Helwick was a multiple-time All-American for Tennessee and still competes at a World-class level. Addy and Helwick didn't compete in every event.
Eric Broadbent of HPC Elite won the meet with a score of 7,558 followed by Barroilet at 7,322.
