The High Point University men's track & field team hosted the third annual VertKlasse Meeting on Sunday and had several strong performances. The Panthers' 1-2 finish by
Evan Emery and
Justin Conaway in the 100-meter dash highlighted HPU's results.
“Going 1-2 with Evan and Justin in the 100 was very encouraging going into the conference championship next week,” said HPU head coach
Mike Esposito. “Evan had the marks but was injured his senior year of high school and has become eerily consistent this spring. I was very pleased with the men's mile with several season bests and personal bests. Our performances today will bode well for next weekend.”
Running into a headwind, Emery clocked a 10.94 to edge Conaway's 10.96. Shortly after, HPU took second and fourth in the 110-meter hurdles as
Alex Fisher finished in 15.00 and
Ryan Venable won the second heat with a time of 15.27. HPU's 4x100 relay team of Conaway,
Tristan Faure,
Sebastien Bonnot and Emery placed second in a season-best 42.59.
High Point University had four strong performances in the first heat of the men's mile. Sophomore
Jacob Smith continued his successful outdoor season with a runner-up finish in a time of 4:09.91. The race winner, Donnie Cowart of Ragged Mountain Racing, pulled away to win in 4:05.80 on the last lap. Junior
Neal Darmody, who typically races longer distances, placed fourth in a career-best 4:14.14 followed by freshman
Patrick Crawford in 4:14.86 and sophomore
Dakota Peachee in 4:15.28.
Senior
Corey Grove set a career-best of 1:54.42 to place seventh in the 800-meter. His previous best was 1:55.01 from the 2009 Big South Championship.
In the field, Faure placed sixth in the long jump with a leap of 6.29 meters (20-7.75) and threw the javelin 42.87 meters (140-7) to place eighth. Freshman
Steven Scally threw the shot put a career-best 12.14 meters (39-10) to place eighth, placed ninth in the discus and he also took 10th in the javelin.
Ben AuYeung placed seventh in the high jump.
The meet featured several elite performances highlighted by Lake Erie freshman Jamil Dudley, who cleared a career-best 2.22 meters (7-3.25).
The focal point of the Panthers' season is this week when the team travels to Lexington, Va., to compete in the Big South Championship at VMI. Competition runs Thursday through Saturday.
