Jacob Smith won the 3,000-meter to pace the High Point University men's track & field team at the Wake Forest Open on Saturday in Winston-Salem, N.C. Freshman
Evan Emery was runner-up in the 100-meter dash.
“We knew Jacob could do this in the 3K, he closed well and raced for the win,” said HPU head coach
Mike Esposito. “Evan was injured for most of his senior year of high school so this is the first time in a while he has been able to race healthy.”
Smith took the lead with just over two laps to go and finished the 3,000-meter in a collegiate best 8:19.19. Behind Smith in that event, junior
Neal Darmody placed fifth in 8:34.01, sophomore
Dakota Peachee placed ninth in 8:44.63 and freshman
Patrick Crawford placed 11th in 8:48.54.
Out of the second heat of the 3,000-meter,
Jacob Roach placed 14th overall in 8:56.78 and sophomore
Jonathan Riley placed 15th in 8:59.18, breaking 9:00 for the first time in that event. Senior
Jevin Monds ran unattached and finished fifth overall in 8:34.01.
“Neal has been training well, he'll be fine running the 10K out at Stanford next weekend,” said Esposito. “It was good to get Dakota and
Jacob Roach back racing after they were injured during the indoor season.”
Emery had a breakout day in the sprints as he was runner-up in the dash in a career-best 10.62. He came back in the 200-meter and won his heat, placing 20th overall with a time of 22.05. Senior
Justin Conaway placed sixth in the 100-meter dash final, matching his time from the trials on Friday. Junior
Alex Fisher placed ninth in the 110-meter hurdles in a time of 15.20.
In the 1,500-meter, senior
Corey Grove placed 22nd in 4:06.91 junior
Seth Harwood came in at 4:18.42. Freshman
Steven Scally threw the discus 35.50 meters (116-6) to place 40th.
High Point is back in action next weekend when the Panthers compete in the Raleigh Relays at NC State on Friday and Saturday in Raleigh, N.C. Darmody will compete in the 10,000-meter at the Stanford Invitational in Palo Alto, Calif.
